Vanir would separate boys and girls from each other ever since they were little children. They would not only accept different kinds of education, but also live in different places. Freyja was sent to learn sorcery, while her brother was trained to be a warrior. This was not only the first time that Freyja left her brother’s side, but also her first time staying in an unfamiliar environment alone. Before that, their childhood had been spent, hand in hand, as inseparable companions in the land of Gods.
Winter was approaching. When the land was covered with frost, men and women of Vanir would go home to spend the Winter time together. This year, Freyja would soon finish her training in sorcery and then take up a position in the great hall of Valhalla, while her brother would embark on a journey of battles. They would be separated forever.
In Freyja’s mind, the past memories of laughing and playing with Freyr kept reappearing. She was hoping that Winter could come as soon as possible in the sorcery school. She had heard that her brother was working hard to prepare for a duel, a duel that would probably take her brother away from her.
Freyr, Victorious Deity of the Sea: With the Sword of Victory, I’ll surely defeat the representative of Aesir.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: What if you lose?
Freyr, Victorious Deity of the Sea: I’ve made a vow. If I lose, I’ll leave the tribe.
Freyr, Victorious Deity of the Sea: But this will definitely not happen.
One evening, during the changing of the guards, Freyja seized the chance to slip into the storehouse of weapons.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: I must knock the guards unconscious without being noticed by anyone.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: The Sword of Victory! I just need to hide it, then brother will...
After being defeated in the duel with Thor, the representative of Aesir, Freyr kept his vow to leave Vanir. He prepared a ship to sail to the land of Aesir. When he was ready to set off and arrived at the shore, he saw Freyja, who was carrying a bag on her back and waiting for him. As Freyr reached to take her bag, he knocked off the cloth covering her package, which slid to the floor along the curves of her body. It was his lost Sword of Victory.
‘True sadness does not come from his lack of love for me; rather it is that without his presence by my side, I will succumb to insanity and so, I must be a burden for him.’ ^ Standing in a magic circle of Runes, Freyja infused the power into a branch of the Divine Tree in compliance with Odin’s order. As instructed, Freyja used the godly power to create a beast with her strong emotions for the protection of everyone.
However, when Freyja was channelling her godly power into the Sacred Wood, she seemed to lose her connection with the world, falling into a dark vortex. Everything around her disappeared, leaving her all alone. A voice spoke in her mind, like another person.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: I see countless shadows of you.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: You’re a most intimate friend of mine, and an unbeatable opponent.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: Sometimes I feel like you’re still staying by my side.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: Like it was in the good old days.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: But sometimes in a nightmare, you’re my sworn enemy.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: How can I catch up to you, pull you back to my side,
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: and stop you from endlessly pursuing victory?
Freyja jumped out of her chaotic vortex of thoughts, yet she never stopped thinking of Freyr. ‘I want him to stay by my side, even if it means blocking his roads to bliss, even if we’re not as intimate as we were in childhood...’
‘On the road, he no longer holds my hand. In rest, he no longer lets me lean against him. We no longer climb up trees where I used to cuddle up to him in the silent woods. I can only follow him to the battlefield, trying hard to catch up to him in the sea of people and blood. When going back, he doesn’t carry me on his back anymore, though I’m as delicate as before...’ Another ‘Freyja’ was getting steamed up. ‘If he goes on in the same way, I should let him go! He’s strong and every step he takes is large. I can’t keep up! But he ——’
Memories were flitting before Freyja's eyes. On the wood, the images rolled into strips and curled into a green snake.
‘—— He turned back to save me! My admirers were already by my side ready to sacrifice themselves for me. But my brother still came back to save me and allowed me to fall into his arms——’ Freyja saw another one of herselves crying. ‘He’s the reason why I’m unwilling to give up! It’s his fault!’
Freyja realized that the power of Runes were extracting her memories. She immediately uttered a spell.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: I must resist the power of Runes, to retrieve the memories I treasure.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: This is the will of Odin.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: The Runes backfiring are not something to be trifled with.
Freyja stopped the magic circle forcibly. With her clothes dishevelled, she ran across the corridor in the Valhalla, where Odin was training the Valkyries. Freyja shouted to him. ‘Tell me!’ Sensing the ill feelings of Freyja, the Valkyries immediately put the spears away and left. Freyja threw the Sacred Wood to the ground near Odin. ‘What’s your plot?’
‘Just for saving you.’ Odin picked up the wood. The Earth elements transformed into green snakes and snapped at his armor, but Odin’s power subdued them. ‘And everybody.’
‘Thank you very much, almighty Odin!’ Freyja said sharply. ‘Those are my memories! I’ll rather let them wear down in my godly power!’
Complying with Odin’s request, Freyja was responsible for taking care of and sifted the heroic spirits. Acting as the lover of the spirits, she directed their love towards her, so they would all become her admirers. Freyja’s love supported the spirits of the deceased heroes. She allowed the heroic spirits to sharpen their swordsmanship and get ready for Ragnarök.
The heroic spirits shared their emotions and their stories with Freyja. In her heart, she clearly knew that the seeds of their past love were long dead before blossoming. The spirits would all be forgotten by their beloved one day. Their fading affection could no longer support them to continue fighting, so she must become their lover herself. When Ragnarök approached, Freyja would lead them to battle against the Demons.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: My brave warriors, fight for love!
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: The Gods are fighting against the Dragon of Poison.
Freyja, Fair Deity of Love: Let’s eliminate the leader of the Demons.
In the past, Odin was granted mighty godly power from the Runes. Foreseeing his our future, he decided to share his power with his best companions. To test them, he asked Freyja and the others to create a servant to aid the people in their fight against the Demons. However, Freyja was lazy that she did not comply. Odin then asked her to come to Valhalla to take care of the heroic spirits with his daughter. Freyja accepted this task willingly, and gradually, she even became enthusiastic about caring for the spirits.
However, after Ragnarök, the spirits, together with their love and desire, all dissipated into thin air. Freyja finally realized the true meaning within the Vanir tribal leaders’ words. “With desire, people will lose themselves in the maze of love. Only love that has never come to fruition remains pure and faithful.” Freyja had always been loving Freyr, even he was forever unreachable for her.
