The child looked at his father’s body, which was being placed among the flowers and the funerary porcelain on a boat grave.
Priest: The golden light will guide you,
Priest: in return for your great contribution and achievements!
Priest: You surpassed enemies and snoopers, saying to everyone,
Priest: ‘Darkness? Wherever I step, there is only illuminating light!’
‘He’s not a hero.’ The child lowered his head and paid no attention to the priest’s words anymore. His father was incompetent, never a brave man. Although he was born with the title of ttribal chief, he had never performed any heroic deeds. Even at the end, the child still did not respect his father who had died of an acute disease.
Priest: —— We shall remember his merits, and prolong the honor of Aesir!
Child: Liar .
A friend beside him tugged at his sleeve.
Child: Did I say anything wrong? I'm sure they'll soon forget my father.
He whispered to his friend, when his friend pointed forward to remind him that the elder was approaching.
Elder: Thor, you’re going to inherit the title of Chief.
Elder: But I know you’re not yet ready.
Elder: Let me test your abilities, to see if you’re worthy of your father's title.
Elder: Thor, you’ll inherit the position as the Chief,
Elder: and the Divine Hammer Mjölnir.
The Divine Hammer was wrapped in satin cloth. The elder passed it to the child, while the tribesmen by the riverside was yelling and pushing the boat into the river.
Elder: In the past, your father had sworn an oath for the tribe’s prosperity.
Elder: And he fulfilled it.
Elder: Thor, take the hammer and swear an oath.
Elder: It will respond to you with lightning.
Thor was at a loss. He asked his friend for help. The boy nodded to him firmly and supported his arm so that he could lift up the hammer. The weight of the hammer was so heavy that it seemed to be pressing Thor down onto the ground.
The sky had turned dark, when the candlelight on the boat slowly faded into the distance on the mirror of the starry sky. It was so hard for Thor that his face turned red. He had never thought about giving an oath. He raised his head strenuously and looked up. In the sky filled with countless stars, he saw his friend supporting him to hold the hammer. Straining to hold it high, he blurted out an oath.
Thor: I shall be strong, as indestructible as the Divine Hammer!
The Divine Hammer recognized his oath and it summoned a thunderbolt which struck the pyre and set fire to it. As the horn sounded, the tribesmen shouted the names of Mjölnir and Thor. The elder said to him contentedly,
Elder: When you reach manhood, you’ll inherit the position to be the Chief.
‘I will not.’ Thor, the God of Thunder, finally voiced his answer that had long been hiding in his heart since childhood. Standing on a boulder in the deserted lands, he gazed at the broken Enochian Tower, perched in the distance. Thor had reached the age to inherit the position as Chief, but he decided not to accept the appointment of the elder. His memories remained frozen in his childhood. from the moment that the elder had asked him to swear the oath.
Surprised, everyone in the tribe stared at Thor. Since the child Thor swore his oath to the hammer, the tribesmen had recognized him as inheritor of the Chief.
Thor: Odin, only you can lead us.
Thor pushed his friend behind him to the front to face the crowd. It was Odin, who had supported him to hold the hammer and encouraged him to swear the oath in that starry night. Thor said to everyone firmly, only this man could bring victory to the tribe.
Thor: I'm just a warrior, but Odin can be a great leader for us.
Thor put down the hammer. When he was ready to give it to Odin, Odin thrust his spear towards him.
Odin the Knight of Runes: Thor, you’re the valiant warrior in the tribe.
Odin the Knight of Runes: If you think you’re weaker than me,
Odin the Knight of Runes: then let me pierce you through with my spear.
Thor: Odin, do we really have to do this?
Thor: Odin, although you’re yet to be a match for me,
Thor: when it comes to the fight against Demons,
Thor: what we need are your profound wisdom and insights.
Thor: Prosperity can never be brought to the tribe with only brute force.
Odin accepted the position to be the Chief of the tribe, but he refused to take away the Divine Hammer in Thor’s hands. He allowed Thor to fight with the hammer, so that Thor was still the Chief of Aesir nominally, while he regarded himself as the performer of the duties.
In the past, after Odin had shared the power of Runes with the Gods, he asked them to create beasts with their feelings so as to preserve their emotions inside, in the hope that when his will collapsed, the emotions could return back to the Gods. But the Gods did not know his original intention.
Loki created a giant serpent with his anger and summoned a giant wolf with his daughter’s soul embedded. Odin was dissatisfied with Loki for he had created such ferocious beasts, so he ordered Thor to execute them. Thor went to carry out the mission with Tyr, but they had conflicting opinions regarding the issue of how to treat Loki.
Thor, God of Thunder: Tyr, you shouldn’t have let Loki join the Gods.
Thor, God of Thunder: And you shouldn’t have asked Odin to share the power with him.
Tyr, One-armed Deity of War: What did Loki do wrong?
Tyr, One-armed Deity of War: He’s just...
Thor, God of Thunder: The beasts he created are more fearsome than demonic creatures.
Tyr, One-armed Deity of War: But these are his emotions.
Thor, God of Thunder: Tyr, which side are you on?
Tyr, One-armed Deity of War: Thor, we’re on the same side. But I understand Loki more than you do.
Thor, God of Thunder: He’s just a liar.
Thor, God of Thunder: Loki has hid the giant serpent in the forest.
Thor, God of Thunder: Tyr, attack! Don’t show any mercy!
Tyr, One-armed Deity of War: I think I hear Hel’s voice ahead.
Thor, God of Thunder: Who’s Hel? Concentrate on the fight!
During the battle, Tyr dodged the attack of the serpent and strode to chase the familiar voice forward. Thor had no choice but to fight alone. Though he managed to kill the serpent at last, he was severely injured.
After killing the serpent, the severely injured Thor could only rely on the power of the Divine Hammer to heal his wounds. Ragnarök was approaching. On the battlefield, Thor was always behind Odin. Sometimes chasing, but sometimes hiding to throw a lightning bolt to the enemies afar. Odin became more powerful after obtaining the power of Runes. Thor was upset for he had abdicated his chiefdom in favor of Odin.
Thor could not understand his own feelings. He just felt that Odin was drawing farther and farther away from him. Thor engraved the pattern of Runes on his bracer with his newly gained godly power, and wore a magic belt to metamorphose himself so that he could become as one with the Divine Hammer.
Thor, God of Thunder: Tyr, are you running away again?
Tyr, One-armed Deity of War: If I had run away, I wouldn’t have lost my arm.
Odin the Knight of Runes: Don’t bring that up again. Loki will never come back to us.
Thor, God of Thunder: Odin, after killing this dragon, I want to have another fight with you.
Odin the Knight of Runes: Only if I’m still alive...
Odin the Knight of Runes: Thor, you’re always the Chief of Aesir.
After the Dragon of Poison was subdued and sealed in the tower, Odin’s consciousness was engulfed by his power. Though Thor had lost his rival, his grudge against Odin still could not be soothed. When Giallar blew the horn for the last time and the beast returned Thor’s emotions to him, he finally realized that, in all those years, he was not trying to catch up with Odin but to walk alongside him, maybe a few steps forward so Odin would not have to march alone... With his feelings regained, Thor held his hammer up high resentfully, swearing an oath to the hammer again, that he would achieve Odin’s goal for him.
