Ever since Inari had been taken in by Amaterasu, she had been observing Izanagi and Amaterasu while pretending to follow her onmyodo practice, trying to find a chance to revenge by tricking them.
This day, Inari saw melancholy Amaterasu sitting on the window ledge when she was wandering around. It was a rare scene to Inari, for Amaterasu had been optimistic to everything, and she always said,
Amaterasu: “Stay optimistic and problems will be solved”, remember that, Inari!
Sneaking up to Amaterasu, Inari saw a painting in her hands.
Although it was just a simple doodle, she could still recognise Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susanoo in the drawing, who were standing happily together.
Amaterasu: Inari, what’s wrong? Are you hungry? I’ll start cooking now.
Inari watched Amaterasu leave.
Inari: “She must be thinking about her siblings...Hehehe, I figured out a plan to trick her!”
Amaterasu was stunned to freeze when she brought the dinner to the living room.
Amaterasu: T-Tsukuyomi...What are you doing here…? I miss you so much!
When Amaterasu hugged Tsukuyomi, she glimpsed at a swaying white tail behind. Then she immediately figured out that it was just a trick of Inari.
Inari: Hehehe, got you this time!
Inari was thrilled, for her mimic magic had never tricked Izanagi and Amaterasu once. Yet unlike the previous times, Amaterasu scolded at Inari.
Amaterasu: You——This is out of the line! How can you fool me by imitating Tsukuyomi!
Inari: W-What! I...I was just tricking you as usual! Why are you throwing an attitude to me!
Amaterasu: You have no family. You won’t understand!
Inari: Right! I’m a stray fox with no family! I will never understand!
Inari had never spent time with her family, for all her family members had been killed by humans. The angry Inari then stormed out to the town…
Inari: “It was just a little prank! How could Amaterasu throw such an attitude to me!”
Inari: “Even if she apologises to me, I will never go back! NEVER EVER!”
All of a sudden, Inari heard the crying of a child. When she looked over, she saw a little girl crouch aside crying. When she was about to pass by, she recalled Izanagi’s teaching.
Izanagi: “If you can do it, do it.”
Putting a leaf on her head, Inari changed into a cute lady to approach the little girl.
Inari: What happened? Where’s your family?
Little Girl: I stormed out of my house when my brother scolded at me. Now I’m lost and I don’t know how to go home...Boohoo...I wanna go home...
Inari: Don’t cry. Cute girls don’t cry! Come on. Let me take you home.
Little Girl: Oh! I recognise this eatery! My brother takes me here all the time! This way! Go this way and we’ll be home!
Little Girl: The person over there...It’s my brother! Brother——
Little Girl’s Brother: I found you finally! You freaked me out!
The little girl rushed to hug his brother as soon as she saw him. While she was crying, her brother hugged her back, and the two kept apologising to each other.
Little Girl’s Brother: Thank you for bringing my sister home.
Inari: Don’t mention it.
Little Girl’s Brother: If I lost my sister, I’d blame myself for the rest of my life. After all, she only left because I was being too harsh on her.
His words reminded Inari of the angry Amaterasu earlier. Now she began to understand how Amaterasu felt back then...
Inari: “I guess she must be very guilty. That’s why she was sad…”
After farewelling the siblings, Inari decided to go home. Once she turned around, she saw Amaterasu running over to hug her.
At this moment, Inari changed back to the fox appearance and spoke simultaneously with Amaterasu.
Amaterasu: I’m sorry!
Inari: I’m sorry!
Holding Inari into her arms, Amaterasu began to tell her story between Tsukuyomi.
Amaterasu: I’m a bad sister.
Inari: Yes you are.
Inari: If I were you, I would take her to eat bean curd ramen! For no one can resist the temptation of bean curd ramen!
Amaterasu: Haha! Inari you gobbler.
Inari: “She’s laughing! Alright! If she ever gets sad again, I’ll take her to eat bean curd ramen!”
When Inari was napping under the warm sunshine, her nap was interrupted by sudden footsteps. Irritated, she got up and went to Amaterasu, who was packing in a rush.
Inari: Mmm? Are you going to travel?
Amaterasu: Yes! Master will come with me too. Don’t just stand there. I wanna get ready as soon as possible!
Amaterasu pushed Inari out of her room and continued the packing. Despite the bitterness, she thought she should be ready too if they were going on a trip.
Later on, she almost packed the whole kitchen into her big luggage. Then the excited Inari carried her bag and went to the front door to wait for Amaterasu and Izanagi.
Inari: You two are so slow! I’ve been waiting here for so long!
Inari: Where are we going this time? And don’t worry. I’ve got loads of food with me!
Amaterasu: Inari, stay home and look after the house for me. We’ll be back soon.
Inari’s persistence eventually got overpowered by Amaterasu’s stubbornness. No matter what she did, she got pushed back home by Amaterasu, so she had to pretend to compromise.
Inari: Alright! I get it! Just go! I don’t care about you at all!
Sitting at the doorstep, Inari watched Amaterasu and Izanagi leave. When their figures were nowhere to be seen, a trickster grin appeared on Inari’s face.
Inari: Hehehe, do you think that I would give up? Don’t underestimate a fox nose!
Inari: I’ll do the opposite if you forbid me to come along!
Although Amaterasu had rejected Inari’s tag-along request, Inari didn’t care about it at all. She pretended to agree while tailed them discreetly, who went to the taoist institute.
Searching around the perimeter, Inari found a breach at the northern fence that allowed her to sneak in.
Although she’d like to track down Amaterasu by her scent, there were too many people walking around in the institute. She had to hide herself by disguising into different objects.
Taoist A: Whoa! I felt someone was staring at me but I was the only one in the room!
Taoist B: Mine is more terrifying! When I was about to butcher a fish for dinner, it came alive and escaped!
Taoist C: Huh? Speaking of which, where did this statue come from?
The taoists examined the statue closely, which was actually imitated by Inari. Being stared at, Inari started sweating nervously.
Inari: “I...I can’t hold on any longer…”
Izanagi: I think the principal is looking for you guys.
Taoist C: Oh, thanks for the heads up. Let’s head over there.
When the taoists had gone far, Izanagi crouched down and looked at the statue.
Izanagi: Inari, you can change back now.
Inari: Whoa! I’m saved! When did you discover me?
Izanagi: Since the beginning. Can you go back now?
Inari: I’ve made it this far and you still want me to go back! Am I such a liability to you?
Izanagi: Not at all, but this is gonna be very dangerous. Amaterasu will be very sad if you get hurt. This will be the last thing she wants to see. Do you get it?
Inari finally understood Amaterasu’s intention. When she thought of Amaterasu’s crying look, she finally compromised.
Inari: Alright alright! Come back as soon as possible if you two don’t want me to die of starvation! Understand?
