The Grumpy Puppy: ‘What’s this place...? Who am I?’
？？？: ‘Open your eyes, Grumpy Puppy!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Grumpy Puppy...? That’s my name...?’
？？？: ‘Your companion is right beside you. Come on, wake up!’
Grumpy Puppy slowly opened its eyes. A ray of sunlight shined into it eyes. That was the first time it ever saw sunlight, which was a little too bright to him; it made Grumpy squint. It was not until Grumpy had gradually adapted to the radiance did it open its eyes wide to gaze around.
Grumpy noticed a sense of warmth beside it, and found that there was another puppy still slumbering; its steady breathing flowed onto Grumpy’s face. Grumpy could not help flinging itself at the other puppy, trying to wake it...
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Get up! Don’t sleep anymore!’
Eyes half opened, the other puppy still looked a little drowsy. It stretched before noticing the existence of Grumpy Puppy.
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘I’m Grumpy Puppy. And you are?’
The Merry Puppy: ‘So you’re my companion?’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Right... I guess... You’re?’
The Merry Puppy: ‘I’m Merry Puppy! Great! I’m not all alone!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Do you know who awoke us and granted us our identity?’
The Merry Puppy: ‘I only remember that it was a soft voice...’
Just then, they heard joyous laughter emanating from a forest not far from them. Merry, inherently more curious than Grumpy, hurried towards where the source of the commotion with nary a thought.
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Wait! It might be dangerous!’
The Merry Puppy: ‘I’ll be fine! My gut is telling me that it’ll be alright!’
The Merry Puppy: ‘What are you?’
Flower Elf: We are elves. Interested in joining us for a game?
The Merry Puppy: ‘Of course!’
Sea Elf: You are welcome to join us too!
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Thank you for inviting us.’
The puppies and the elves played to their heart’s content until sunset. The elves had to return home...
Lunar Elf: We have to leave now. We had a lot of fun today!
The Merry Puppy: ‘You got to leave? Where are you going?’
Lunar Elf: Back to our home.
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Home? What is that?’
Lunar Elf: Home is a place where everyone can return for rest! It is somewhere where you belong.
The puppies watched as the elves walked away. Suddenly, a thought came up to Merry’s mind...
The Merry Puppy: ‘Home!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘What’s up with the sudden yelling?’
The Merry Puppy: ‘Where do we belong? Who’s the one who woke us, the one with that voice? Why’ve we been born into this realm?’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Don’t ask so many questions at once...’
Ignoring Grumpy’s response, Merry excitedly ran off, and shouted as it looked back...
The Merry Puppy: ‘We’ve got to find the place we belong as well!’
Grumpy forced a smile, and hurriedly chased after Merry. They were going to make an adventure of their very own, and now it was just the beginning...
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Be careful of the loose soil over there!”
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Don’t go that way! That’s the cliff!
Grumpy’s warnings were heard every now and then along the journey. It preferred to walk behind Merry Puppy. To Grumpy, Merry’s reckless behavior was a constant source of worried gasps. Yet, Merry did not change at all, and would still excitedly stride around, paying no attention to potential dangers ahead.
Merry was especially curious about everything around it. But, at present, the puppies had not yet realized that not everyone had good intentions. They were continuing their journey unhurriedly when a gang of werewolves suddenly blocked their way. Grumpy soon detected their malice, but Merry, muddle-headed, was still excitedly running over; it appeared to have no idea of their real intention.
The Merry Puppy: ‘Hey look, you guys look just like us! Are we the same species?’
Azure Wolf: Some, somebody is invading our territory!
Crimson Wolf: The enemy is here!
Emerald Wolf: Alert the boss now!
Werewolf Commander: You dare to intrude on our territory, huh? Do you have any idea that this whole mountain belongs to us?
Werewolf Fighter: You two little puppies think you can takeover?!
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘We were just passing by this place!’
Werewolf Commander: Sorry! Please let me off! I will give you anything you want!
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘There is not much we want. We only wish to pass through your land to the other side, and continue our journey.’
Werewolf Fighter: Aren’t you here to snatch our home from us?
The Merry Puppy: ‘I just want to play with you all...’
Werewolf Commander: That’s really all you want??
Werewolf Commander: It seems that we over-thought things...
Racked by guilt, the werewolves invited the puppies to spend a night here before continuing their journey. That night, they danced around a bonfire, and gazed at the stars. The next morning, the werewolf leader expressed his wish that the puppies would stay behind and join his clan. Though the puppies found the werewolves congenial, they sensed an inexplicable feeling inside them — This is not where their journey should end.
Therefore, the puppies graciously declined the leader’s request before continuing their journey in search of both the place they belong and their mission.
A fire broke out in a knoll near the village upon the Demons’ raid. Nello had rushed into the sea of flames to rescue his grandma being trapped inside her house. Though he had urged the puppies before to stay where they were, Merry Puppy still chased after him into the village.
Grumpy, on the other hand, complied with Nello’s order for it believed that as long as it waited there, Nello would come back for it. They should not chase after him as they may hinder him. Therefore, instead of following Merry to find Nello, it chose to continue waiting on the knoll.
Grumpy had already waited for a long time; however, Nello and Merry still did not return for it. Suddenly, it started raining heavily, extinguishing the flames that engulfed the village. Grumpy had originally thought about getting to shelter, but it dared not leave, for it did not want Nello and Merry to be worried in case they came back for it.
Sopping wet, Grumpy finally could not help but go into the village’s ruins. Yet, there was no sight of Nello and Merry... It once again returned to the knoll, for it believed unswervingly that Nello would keep his promise. Day after day, Grumpy awaited their return. Finally, it was forced to accept the fact that it had been abandoned by Nello and Merry.
In deep despair, it left the knoll, and journeyed in solitude on a seemingly endless path...
Ghost of Willow: There’s a lonely puppy... how pitiful...
Spirit of Pine Wood: There’s a lost puppy... how unfortunate...
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Whether I am pitiful or unfortunate or not,... it’s none of your business!’
???: ‘The mystical power you have is quite impressive!’
???: ‘You have truly surprised me! What impressive power lay hidden inside your tiny body!’
???: ‘You don’t have to resist the mystical power I gave you... You do want to be stronger, right?’
???: ‘Lonely you, look how pitiful you are... Don’t you want vengeance on those who abandoned you?’
???: ‘Use your power to prove that you can be independent, and that you won’t be a loser!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘I don’t have to be afraid even when I’m alone...’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘I’ll make them regret abandoning me...!’
The sinister youkai, dressed like a sorcerer from the Orient, smiling eerily. It took the chance to attach onto Grumpy Puppy, and manipulated it by using the darkness inside it.
Journeying across the realm by itself, Grumpy had grown increasingly aggressive. Wherever it traveled, it would mercilessly crush some opponent or another. Grumpy found its own maliciousness appalling, but it could never restrain itself. Every time it became agitated, it would feel as though there was a voice inside it saying,
???: ‘Don’t try to repress your anger! Let it all out!’
Grumpy gradually felt that it was no longer itself. It tried to stop itself from committing evil but felt helpless; it wished to repress its ferocious temper but repeatedly failed to do so. One night, when it was taking a rest in the forest, the noise fighting emanating from not far away kept it awake. Feeling irritated, Grumpy could no longer hold its temper; it charged towards the commotion.
Before his eyes were Nello and Merry — targets of both its longing and hatred; they were under attack from the gnomes. Though Merry fought as hard as it could, this battle was beyond its ability for they were outnumbered... Seeing the gnomes fast charging Nello, Grumpy suddenly leapt out from the bush at the gnomes, and drove them away.
Nello: Thank goodness... We finally found you!
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Humph! Stop faking it, I won’t get fooled again!
The Merry Puppy: ‘Grumpy! We finally found you!’
The Merry Puppy: ‘We took every effort to look for you!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Don’t pretend you care! You two never cared if I live or die!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘I won’t believe you anymore!’
The Merry Puppy: ‘You can not believe me. You can resent me...’
The Merry Puppy: ‘But, you can never deny Nello’s effort!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Nello’s effort?’
???: ‘Don’t listen to him! It’s a pack of lies!’
At that moment, Nello walked to Grumpy’s side, gently put his arms around it, weeping:
Nello: Sorry... sorry... I didn’t come for you at once. I’m really sorry...
The Merry Puppy: ‘Grumpy, wake up! You don’t remember us?’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘How could I possibly forget you...! It is the two of you who abandoned me!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Do you know how I felt as I waited there for you two to return? It was one disappointment after another...’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘I’ve been... I’ve been waiting there for so long!’
The Merry Puppy: ‘Nello was hurt at that time, and he had to recover before he could come for you.’
The Merry Puppy: ‘Once he got better, he brought me along to search for you! It’s just...’
The Merry Puppy: ‘...that there was no sign of you at that knoll. Since then, we’ve been roaming across numerous towns to look for you!’
The Grumpy Puppy: ‘Really...?’
All the joyous memories of days past rushed into Grumpy’s mind, while a warmth surged from his heart, flooding its whole body. All hatred and darkness buried in its heart was now seemingly dispelled.
Grumpy Puppy’s eyes softened, while the strange mystical power exuding from it gradually dispersed. At that moment, Nello approached it. He squatted down and embraced Grumpy Puppy, said...
Nello: Sorry...I didn’t come at once to pick you up. It’s all my fault! You were even forced to live by yourself for so long...
Grumpy softly licked Nello’s cheeks to express its apologies; Merry did the same thing but in a more vehement way to pacify him. Nello could not stand licking assault and burst into laughter. The louder he laughed, the harder the dogs licked. Finally, the merriment once lost had again spread across their faces and into their hearts...
