Elements created many creatures. Besides slimes, there were also elves. The world of elves is not any different to that of humans, in which they are also divided into classes, with each of these classes carrying different missions.
Low-class elves are created from normal elements. They may have sentience, but not all of them possess wisdom.
As for the middle-class ones, some of them would work for the upper-class elves while some choose to live freely.
Upper-class elves are the royal class. Their words are rules; their existence is the guidance. However, the royal name of upper-class elves needed to be succeeded. The one who inherited the title had to prove to the other elves their area of worth.
Blazing Fire Elf: A new elf is coming soon!
Crowned Flower Elf: I can’t wait to see it!
Raging Sea Elf: The newborn elf will inherit the title “Queen Bee’ right?
The elves gathered to gaze at a golden cocoon. Everyone was expecting the coming of the next Queen Bee as the previous queen was long gone. Queen Bee was the chief of elves in the forest, who provided guidance and protection to her fellows. To the elves, she was the most important and indispensable one.
All the elves had an intuition that the new Queen Bee was on the way as if there was telepathy among them. They waited in fervent anticipation. Yet, day by day, there was not even a crack seen on the cocoon, not to mention seeing it emerging from chrysalis... The elves were disappointed and dispersed- another false hope.
One day, a Night Elf passing by was attracted to the sparkle of the cocoon. It then brought the cocoon back to its habitat.
Marguerite: Where... where am I?
Marguerite: Why... am I... here...?
Sacred Slime: A golden egg!
Demon Slime: A golden egg!
Wavy Slime: Someone’s here!
Blazing Slime: It’s broken!
Blooming Slime: It’s broken!
Forest Slime: Run! Quick! Run!
With the help of slimes, Marguerite escaped from the cave with all her effort. Yet, she did not know how to move her own body as she was just emerged from chrysalis. And so, she was a bit slow.
Night Elf: She’s there!
Witch of the Shadowy Night: Don’t let her escape!
The elves launched incessant attacks at Marguerite. Though she was hurt again and again, she endured the pain and kept running to the skirts of forest. Her intuition told her: Only there can you find hope. Shortly after she had walked out of the forest, she met a little girl who helped her to drive the pursuing elves back...
Isabel: I am Isabel. And you?
Isabel: From today onwards, we are best friends!
Since then, Marguerite visited Isabel every day. They shared with each other knowledge and interesting snippets. Marguerite thought those days would continue forever, while she did not expect the forest being invaded by some other forces. Being the heiress of Queen Bee, she had no choice but returned to the deepest part of forest, leading her elves in defense of their home.
Marguerite: What’s their approximate location? How many are there?
Crowned Flower Elf: Your Majesty, the gnome army is at the skirts of the northern forest, with...
Crowned Flower Elf: an uncountable amount... There’re too many of them.
Flower Elf: What should we do...?
Night Elf: I don’t want to die!
Raging Sea Elf: Your Majesty, we can still make it if we retreat to the other woods now.
Massive numbers of gnomes were pushing towards the forest. Though it was common for elves to compete for land among themselves, a battle with such disparity in strength was rarely seen. This was the first battle of Marguerite as a Queen Bee. She was afraid just like the other elves, but she could not express it... As the leader, she had to look calm to keep everything under control.
Marguerite: Is the other woods still our home?
Marguerite: Are you willing to watch our home being desecrated and utterly destroyed?
Marguerite: We must not retreat! We have to defend our homeland!
Her words gave courage and hope to the elves. They raised weapons made by elements high up in the air; the fear was gone from their hearts, leaving only their determination to defeat their enemies. Marguerite gathered light elements and transformed them into numerous stings. She and the elves were ready to fight their opponents...
Marguerite: Let’s roll! No one can beat us if we have the courage to safeguard our home!
Marguerite: Retreat! Or else you’ll regret.
Gnome Leader: Huh! Who do you think you’re?
Gnome Leader: Re... retreat!
Gnome Leader: We’ll be back right after our rearmament!
Marguerite led the elves in victory over the gnomes, successfully protecting their own homeland. In this battle, the elves were deeply impressed by the wisdom and leadership of Marguerite, and they began to unite because of her. Marguerite inherited the title “Queen Bee”, bearing the responsibility of guiding and guarding the elves.
After Marguerite had assisted the elves’ resettlement in the woods, she went to the garden where she used to gather with Isabel. But for a few days in a row she could not find Isabel... Marguerite started to wonder whether Isabel was mad at her, and was troubled of what she could do.
Later Marguerite found out what happened to Isabel from the maids passing by the garden. During her battle with the gnomes, Isabel was sent to the emperor’s castle, and never came back...
In order to protect Isabel who was losing her humanity day by day, Marguerite lived with her in the deepest part of the forest, and sent out elves to investigate on everything about Isabel.
According to the information collected, Isabel’s lover signed an indenture with a demon called Yatonokami and was working for him. Marguerite immediately set off to look for him.
To Marguerite, everything in the Orient was new but also a little strange. She hid in the forest, peeking out. Suddenly she heard a flirtatious voice behind her...
???: What an unfamiliar face? You’re not a monster from here, right?
The voice came unexpectedly and scared Marguerite out of her wits. She cried out, and turned her head at once to the man speaking to her, who did not look human.
Marguerite: Aren’t you suppose to introduce yourself when you first meet someone?
???: Lovely face! But speaks evil...
He softly lifted up her chin, an act that alarmed Marguerite, whom quickly pulled back; gathering light elements around her, she prepared for an attack.
Marguerite: What... what’re you doing?
Ibarakidouji: My name is Ibarakidouji. I am a youkai living in this woods.
Marguerite: I’m Marguerite, coming from the far west.
Ibarakidouji: Marguerite? What a special name.
Marguerite: None... none of your business!
Marguerite’s heart missed a beat. It was the first time she felt this way. Confusion filled her brain she had no idea what she wanted to say or do.
Ibarakidouji: By the way, what are you doing here?
Marguerite: I’m observing the surrounding and looking for somebody...
Ibarakidouji: It is impossible to find anyone if you keep hiding here.
Marguerite: I don’t want to! But... I...
Ibarakidouji: What is... his name?
Ibarakidouji: Yatonokami... I have never heard about this youkai...
Ibarakidouji: Let me ask around for you!
Ibarakidouji: I will come back and report to you no matter I find something out or not.
Ibarakidouji: See you tomorrow at around the same time!
For consecutive days, they met in that way. Though there were no news leading them to Yatonokami, Ibarakidouji would always tell Marguerite different interesting stories and things he had seen. She began longing for him every day.
One night, Marguerite waited for a long time but Ibarakidouji still did not show up. She was worried so much that she sent elves in search of him. He was discovered to have been trapped inside an inn...
Fubuki: How dare you dreadful youkai!
Hajikamiio the Shikigami: You’ll be punished for shattering my magic field and breaking into our room!
Marguerite: Wait! Please don’t hurt him!
Fubuki: Another wretch?
Marguerite: He’s just helping me to look for Yatonokami. Please let him go...
Shigeharu: Yatonokami is my Shikigami. Why’re you looking for him?
Marguerite made her request to Shigeharu, the master of Yatonokami. Upon hearing what she said, he summoned Yatonokami again and asked about the whole story. Now that he knew Isabel was still alive, he decided to fulfill Yatonokami’s promise to Diarmuid, and took up the responsibility to bring Diarmuid to see Isabel. Marguerite thanked him with delight.
Just when Marguerite was carrying the injured Ibarakidouji and preparing to leave, Fubuki spoke out of a sudden...
Fubuki: Wait! I did not say he can leave!
Shigeharu: Forget it! Not all youkai do evil deeds.
After Marguerite nodded at Shigeharu again in thanks, she quickly left with Ibarakidouji. Once they were back in the deep forest, she immediately checked his wound, and could not help weeping with the thought of his near death.
Ibarakidouji reached out his hand, wiping the tears off her face and pulling her into his arms. At that moment, Marguerite finally could understand how Isabel felt- sacrifice everything in order to stay with her love forever.
After Ibarakidouji’s recovery, he accompanied Marguerite back to her hometown. Ibarakidouji was warmly welcomed in the woods as a guest of Queen Bee. He enjoyed everything there and was excited by things of the west as well.
Very soon, Marguerite brought Ibarakidouji to take a peek at Isabel. She could no longer recognize anyone, seeing every creature as prey in her eyes. Marguerite was by the sight of Isabel turning into an ogre...
Ibarakidouji: To be honest, she’s not the Isabel you used to know...
Ibarakidouji: Isn’t it better to just end her suffering with one slash?
Marguerite: Don’t even think about it. I won’t let anyone harm her!
Ibarakidouji saw the seriousness in her face, and could not help giggling. He knew that Marguerite was a serious person who would keep her word. He was just joking, for he also did not mean to kill Isabel. Ibarakidouji looked into her eyes, and said...
Ibarakidouji: If, even her lover can not bring her back...
Ibarakidouji: Then what will you do?
Marguerite: I am not sure as well.
Marguerite: The only way I could possibly think of is to let her reunite with her lover.
Ibarakidouji: The only one who can fix the problem must be the one who created it.
Ibarakidouji: Let’s look for the witch then!
Marguerite: We want to see Blair the Witch!
Deep Woods Lizard Knight: Lady Blair is busy at work and will not see anyone.
Lava Rock Lizard Knight: Off you go!
Ibarakidouji: Huh! You’re afraid to see us, old hag?
Ibarakidouji: Don’t worry! I have seen even uglier women anyway.
Lava Rock Lizard Knight: Do not speak ill of Lady Blair!
Blair the Witch of Rotten Woods: Is that you? Queen of elves...
Blair the Witch of Rotten Woods: Aren’t you very busy taking care of your dear mutated friend?
Blair the Witch of Rotten Woods: How do you still have spare time to visit me?
Ibarakidouji: Old hag always nags.
Marguerite: Hand over the antidote for that peculiar potion!
Ibarakidouji: Old hag is really dumb and slow...
Marguerite: If you don’t want to die, give me the antidote!
Blair the Witch of Rotten Woods: I’ll do it as you say! Don’t bother me again! And...
Blair the Witch of Rotten Woods: Never call me an old hag again!
Marguerite successfully got the antidote from Blair. To ensure the antidote acquired through such effort not go to waste, Marguerite smeared it on her bee sting, then secretly stung it into the body of Isabel.
Despite the antidote having already been injected into her, there was not even a slight change in Isabel’s condition... While Marguerite expected it, she felt quite disappointed realising the antidote was of no effect. Suddenly someone walked near the woodland. Marguerite and Ibarakidouji hurriedly hid in the bush.
Yatonokami and a man who seemed to know Isabel closed upon her. Isabel still could not recognize who it was before her in the end, and instead, only thought of him as prey. Unsurprisingly, the two of them engaged in a fight while Marguerite was watching nervously at one side...
With the blink of an eye, their attacks penetrated each other’s body. Marguerite gasped, and even Ibarakidouji standing beside her was stunned. However, she noticed that Isabel’s glassy and fierce stares had returned to her gentle eyes she once owned.
Just when Marguerite thought everything would be fine, the bodies of Isabel and that man started to disappear into flickers of light, vanishing piecemeal. Marguerite attempted to rush to them but was stopped by Ibarakidouji. At that moment, Isabel turned to look at them, with her gaze falling upon Marguerite, then softly said something and completely vanished...
Isabel: ‘Thank you, Marguerite. You were always my favorite girl.’
What Isabel said at last reminded Marguerite of their childhood, the best time there was with nothing to worry about. She could not hold back her tears anymore. Marguerite was drenched in the tears streaming down her face.
Ibarakidouji: Don’t cry. I believe they will be happier now in their afterlife.
