Lu Xun’s Mother: There’s no one here! What a lunatic!
The young Lu Xun was born with a gift, which allowed him to see “friends” that were demons invisible to ordinary people. As his interactions with the demons were strange to the others, the people around him believed that he was a lunatic.
Lu Xun’s parents, who ran out of patience to his abnormality, decided to abandon him at a village far away from their home. Being alone in a strange place terrified Lu Xun, but he also knew that his parents wouldn’t come back for him anymore. The loneliness of no one understanding him gradually turned into a phobia about humans.
Lu Xun: “Why can’t they understand?”
Lu Xun was sobbing at an abandoned suburb; meanwhile, an ascetic passer-by gave him a sympathetic gaze.
Ascetic: Boy, why are you here alone? Come with me.
That kind, amiable face warmed Lu Xun with the caring he had been missing for a long time. The broken child here decided to put his faith in humans for one last time…
Raised and instructed by the ascetic, Lu Xun gradually became capable of exorcising alone. The kind-hearted Lu Xun would judge a demon before exorcism, sparing those that were kind in nature. One day, Lu Xun and his master came across a girl, who was teased by a group of bullies. Lu Xun defended the girl by scaring them off with magic.
Lu Xun: My name is Lu Xun. Are you alright?
Instead of thanking Lu Xun’s help, the girl got back on her feet by herself. Then she looked at the ascetic standing behind Lu Xun.
Girl: Is he your master?
Lu Xun: Em...Yes. We practice and exorcise together.
Next second, the girl sobbed in front of the ascetic.
Girl: I don’t wanna be their punching bag ever again. Please, sir, accept me as your disciple.
The ascetic approved her request as soon as Zhang Jue raised it. When she turned to Lu Xun, the pitiful face became cold in just a split second.
Zhang Jue: My name is Zhang Jue. Nice to meet you.
Lu Xun had noticed something about Zhang Jue after spending days with her. Despite her talent for magic, she was a very difficult and vigilant person. Later on when Lu Xun found out the tragic of her parents’ death, he started feeling sympathetic to her.
Lu Xun: Don’t be sad. Your parents’ death is not your fault.
Zhang Jue: Don’t get me wrong. My parents died because they were weak. And it’s only temporary for me to sponge off someone else. When I’m strong enough...When the right timing comes...
Although Lu Xun was still afraid of Zhang Jue, he tried his best to get along with her for the ascetic’s sake. This day, they were assigned to clean the house. When Lu Xun glimpsed at what Zhang Jue was doing, he stopped her immediately.
Lu Xun: Don’t touch that jade on the magic circle! A notorious monster is sealed inside the jade. It took Master a lot of effort to contain it.
Zhang Jue: Oh. Is that so? That means this monster must be very powerful...
Zhang Jue stared at the jade with a deep gaze; not only she wasn’t afraid, but she seemed interested in it. She concealed her excitement as soon as she sensed Lu Xun’s attention on her, resuming the chore.
Lu Xun: “This doesn’t feel right to me…”
At night, Lu Xun’s unsettled feeling became reality. A scream woke him up from a sweet dream.
Lu Xun: “It’s Master’s voice! From his bedroom!”
Lu Xun rushed to his master’s bedroom without getting dressed. When he arrived, he saw his master lying on the floor with a wound on his shoulder. In the room, he saw Zhang Jue holding the jade, and a huge ugly demon twice as large as her.
Ascetic: Zhang Jue..Why did you...break the seal...Cough!
Zhang Jue: Hehe...This is it...This is the power I’ve been seeking for!
Demon: How dare you old fool seal me in that broken jade! Your death is the only thing to sooth my anger!
Lu Xun: “No! Master saved my life. I must protect him!”
Right when the demon was blasting its wicked energy at the ascetic, Lu Xun took the hit with his petite body for his master.
Lu Xun: Arghhh——!
The pain made Lu Xun feel like he was torn apart. Meanwhile, a flux of blood was gushing from his mouth, staining his white shirt to crimson.
Ascetic: Xun! How dare you hurt my disciple...I won’t let you live!
What had happened to Lu Xun ignited the bloodlust of a kind man. The ascetic seized the moment to chant a deadly spell at the demon when it was still in shock.
Demon: “This old fool just wounded me severely...Humph! I still haven’t recovered the damage from the seal. Better forfeit the battle!”
Signalling the Zhang Jue, the demon and she fled the scene immediately, leaving the ascetic and the critically injured Lu Xun.
Lu Xun: “Ahh...This is great...Master is unharmed...That’s worth dying for… ”
Lu Xun: Cough! Master...Thank you...for your care in all these...years...Forgive me that...I need to leave you now...
Ascetic: Xun...Don’t worry. I won’t let you go. Even if I have to trade your life with mine...
Lu Xun: What...did you...
Much as he wanted to speak, the massive blood loss had exhausted his body. As his consciousness and sight were fading away, the last thing he remembered was the bright moon and the singing of the ascetic...
Lu Xun: Master!
By the time Lu Xun woke up, it was morning already. Adapting himself to the bright light, he saw a blood circle drawn on his body.
Lu Xun: “What happened...All the wounds on me have healed. Did master…”
Turning around, Lu Xun soon spotted human bones buried under the fallen leaves. Much as he would like to act in denial, he knew that the body was his master when he swept the leaves away. Taking another look around him, everything had changed as if many years had passed.
Lu Xun: “Master...sacrificed himself to save me…”
Lu Xun wiped away his tears as he would like to do one more thing for his master, burying him properly. Since the abandonment of his parents, his ascetic was like a parent to him as well as the only person who understood him.
Lu Xun: “I need to figure out how many years I slept...Master said that the demon would flip this world upside down. I gotta track it down now...for Master!”
Getting himself together, Lu Xun stood up and stretched his body after a long hibernation. When he had enough warm-up, he set off and embarked on his journey.
