Young Osiris: Don’t cry. Everything’s gonna be fine. Let’s play together, all right?
Although Osiris was in the room, sitting on the floor alone, it seemed like he was talking to someone. His parents looked at him worriedly from outside the room. Since his birth, he had always been able to see what others could not see.
As he grew, he even gained the ability to communicate with these “things”. At first, his parents thought he had hallucinations; but gradually they found out that Osiris could really get in touch with “something”, because he would always spurt details of something which he should not have known.
One day, after Osiris had gone to school, his parents hid a book that he had long wanted in his drawer, as a surprise for him. However, the moment Osiris returned home, he already knew of both his parents’ present for him, and even its location. Questioned by his parents, Osiris said that “someone” had told him about this. His parents was shocked; after all, only two of them were in the room when they were putting the book in the drawer.
From then on, Osiris’ parents firmly believed that their son could get in touch with something that ordinary people could not see or hear. Therefore, they invited numerous people who claimed to be skilled in exorcism, in hopes of saving their beloved son...
With their tranquility disrupted, the souls of the deceased rose anxiously, causing great commotion. Then, as Osiris returned home from school, he heard the groans of the souls, he hurriedly rushed forward to stop the exorcists.
Young Osiris: Stop it! Can't you see their pain?
With opposition from Osiris, the exorcists were forced to stop. Everyone stared perplexedly at Osiris. Panting, he ignored their gazes and focused solely upon soothing the souls’ agony.
Young Osiris: Are you alright? Feeling better now?
In his eyes, he was tenderly consoling the souls in front of him; but in the eyes of the others, he was just talking to air and then smiling in relief. The absurdity of the scene was not lost on those present. Even Osiris himself did not know that he had been chosen by the souls of the deceased to bear the mission of guiding them.
To ensure that a beacon would continue to shine in their dark road, the souls granted Osiris immortality. But for Osiris, this was actually a never-ending curse — he had to witness his loved ones dying, one after another, while he himself had an unending life. As time passed, he gradually realized that he had an innate mission. Thus, he had to embark on a journey in search of his calling.
At last, from the soul of a sage, he found out the stories behind all — including why he was chosen by the souls of the deceased, and why they would not tolerate his death...
To uncover the reason behind his immortality, Osiris visited different temples and read various unique books. At last, from the soul of a sage, he learnt the reason behind his immortality and the mission that comes along with it...
However, with the spread of the war, the world was increasingly flooded with souls of the deceased. Knowing Osiris’ ability to communicate with them, the souls harassed him incessantly. Annoyed, he led them to their final destination, in which everything would dissipate, and the souls of the deceased could then have a rest...
Later in a temple, Osiris accidentally found the Book of the Dead. Hence, he sought the souls of the deceased whose names were written in the book, guiding them to paradise. Day after day, year after year, Osiris had been following the book’s guidance to find the dying.
This time, he arrived at a town as guided by the book. He walked through a wall, and stood before a man. The man was studying a corpse in front of him. He was so absorbed he could not sense something was behind him. Osiris cleared his throat and said,
Osiris: Excuse me. You are Robert Harrison, right?
However, the man did not give him any response. He focused solely on his work, murmuring to himself,
Robert Harrison: Pleural effusion... But what are those strange bruises on the neck and there is dirt in the scrapings from the fingernails...?
Osiris: ... Robert Harrison?
Robert Harrison: Ah! She was strangled to death, and then the murderer force-fed her water to conceal her true cause of death.
Osiris was shocked as he saw Robert’s reaction. It was not until Robert finished the autopsy report did he notice Osiris’ presence.
Robert Harrison: You... When did you come in? There’ s nothing valuable here. Go away.
Osiris: I think you are mistaken. I am here to tell you, you are going to die soon.
Osiris: I am just waiting for the moment of your death, and then, I shall lead you to your final destination, where the souls of the deceased belong...
Robert Harrison: You must be joking! I’m perfectly alright now. Why would I suddenly die?
Osiris: Your death is predestined, whether you believe me or not does not matter. I am simply here to notify you.
Robert Harrison: I won’t die so easily. My wife and son are depending on me...
Robert Harrison: Get out of here! Or else I will...
Robert had not finished speaking to Osiris, but when he turned his head, Osiris had already disappeared. All that remained was his voice echoing through the air:
Osiris: It is your choice whether you believe me or not. Either way, when the time comes, I shall come to take your soul.
Osiris: You decide how you shall use your remaining time...
Over the years, all the souls of the deceased and the dying Osiris met were willing to follow him to the next world. Robert was the first to resist death so vigorously. Osiris quietly observed him from overhead, only to find him no different than the typical person — go to work and then go back home, same routine every day. Osiris could not find the cause behind his attachment to life.
One morning, as Robert first stepped into the mortuary, he saw that Osiris was waiting for him while meddling with the corpses. Initially appalled, his emotion soon changed from fear to fury. He said to Osiris fiercely.
Robert Harrison: I’ve told you that I’m NOT going to die! Don’t bother me, OK?
Osiris: Don’t worry. The time has not come yet. I am just here to remind you to fulfill your final wishes wish as soon as possible.
Osiris: After you have done that, then follow me to final destination!
After finishing the words, Osiris again vanished right before Robert’s eyes. Robert still didn't calm down. He threw his tools onto the ground and pointed to the air, shouting angrily:
Robert Harrison: My only wish is to not die! Can you fulfill that for me, huh?
From then onwards, Osiris followed him, occasionally appearing to remind him of his approaching death. And so, Robert thought that if he could evade Osiris, then perhaps he could evade death as well...
One morning, Robert intentionally took a different road from his usual one, but still, he ran into Osiris during his trip..
Since Robert knew that Osiris would be waiting for him at his workplace, he applied for a temporary switch of work location.
However, he had not anticipated that regardless of whether how many places he switched to, he would still find Osiris waiting for him there.
At last, his whole family moved to live temporarily in the house of a relative.
But before he stepped into the house, he already saw Osiris standing at the door, awaiting his arrival.
Robert Harrison: Enough! I’m not dying! Not dying! Not dying!
Osiris: Waiting for your death and guiding your soul is my mission. You have two days left. Cherish them!
After Osiris disappeared, Robert vacantly stared at the falling snow. His life was like snow — soon to melt without a trace, as if it had never existed. He turned his head to look at his family — his wife, his young son. Unwilling to die, he started thinking about how to evade the destined death...
Robert was fidgety today, as it was his day of his death. Thinking that his wife and son would be left alone and helpless in the world, his fear and resistance to death was growing. He had expected to see that hateful God again, but yet, Osiris did not appear.
Just as Robert thought a miracle had arrived, he heard some eerie cries outside. He looked through the window to see a man in strange clothes trying to capture the myriad souls of the deceased in the air; yet, Osiris was already occupied comforting the souls, unable to deal with the man...
Robert dashed out of his house to help Osiris. And he realized that other people could neither see the souls, nor hear their cries.
He was not able to see or hear them in the past, but now he...
Robert Harrison: Hey! What’s going on?
Osiris: That guy is capturing the souls! I don’ t understand what his objective is, but he has agitated the souls that are queuing to the final destination.
Osiris: The souls are now scattered!
Robert Harrison: Let me help you!
Osiris was quite shocked that Robert helped him; and he had not anticipated that Robert, too, could see the souls of the deceased.
It meant that his death was imminent...
Eventually Robert failed to capture the man, losing a token for mercy from Osiris to let him go. He returned home disappointedly, while his wife was waiting at the door worriedly.
Although she did not know what had actually happened, she knew it must be something very important since he had dashed out so anxiously. Robert and his wife tightly embraced each other, and their son gripped on tightly as well. Watching the family, Osiris finally understood a bit about why Robert loathed death so much...
Osiris could not help but sigh. Being immortal, he had always thought that only death could bring him true release; but the man before his eyes was actually fighting desperately to continue his life. Robert signalled his wife and son to enter the house with a smile, and then slowly walked to Osiris after they had gone inside. Robert and Osiris looked into the house through the window and saw Robert’s wife and son playing happily.
Robert Harrison: I can't bear leaving them. Can you help me take care of them after my death?
Osiris was silent for some time, and then shook his head, saying:
Osiris: As you have helped me against that strange man, I shall give you a little extra time...
Osiris: Let’s say one day. Spend this time with your family, and get your affairs in order.
Then, Osiris disappeared in the air. Robert shouted “thank you” many times but Osiris had long gone. However, the next day, Robert’s name disappeared from the Book of the Dead. This bemused Osiris, but he decided not to investigate further. He had a sudden feeling that perhaps not having to take Robert’s soul was also a good thing for him...
After that, Osiris continued carrying out his mission, guiding the souls of the deceased to their destination and finding the lost souls. Yet, one thing was different: he no longer regarded his immortality as a curse, but a blessing given by the souls.
