In a spacious and elegant room, Oichi the teenage girl was lying on her bed. The whole room was arranged and decorated according to her liking. His older brother, Nobunaga, even asked people to paint her favorite patterns on the ceiling just to make her feel better when she was in bed. However, she was too ill to appreciate all of these.
Oichi started coughing violently as that ripping and burning pain came from her chest again. Even though she covered her mouth with her hands, the cough still traveled beyond the room. Soon after that, the servants came in with hurrying footsteps.
- Servant: Miss Oichi! Are you alright?
- Oichi: I’m fine. I’m feeling better today. Can you get me something to eat?
- Servant: Sure, I will get right to it. I’m so glad that you’ve got an appetite now. I was so afraid that you would faint from hunger—you only had a bowl of congee yesterday.
- Oichi: Brother… Did he say whether he was coming over today?
- Servant: Young Master said he will be here later today.
- Oichi: Great. I’ll tell Brother that I’m regaining my appetite and I’m getting better soon.
Said Oichi, whose voice tailed off as if even she didn’t believe in herself so she could only reassure herself by saying that over and over again.
In fact, Oichi had a rather sound grasp of her own condition. She had been staying in bed for days ever since that cold she had a year ago. It first started with a little cough, then it turned into continuous and racking coughs; she even coughed up blood sometimes. Soon, the night fell and Nobunaga came to visit her as promised with a bowl of medicine in his hands.
- Nobunaga: Kuro gave birth today. Oh, Kuro is that pony we both rode when we were small. Its baby is so adorable. Maybe you can think of a name for it if you have time.
- Nobunaga: Oh right, there will be a festival in town a few months later. Let’s go and take a look when you get better.
- Oichi: That’s great. I’d like to see that if I can.
Since Oichi fell sick, Nobunaga had come to visit her almost every day and told her all the trivial stories in the town. Oichi, of all people, knew that Nobunaga had no interest in all these things.
Actually, she didn’t enjoy going to the festival; she sometimes didn’t quite get what Nobunaga said, but she just liked listening to her brother and that feeling of him being by her side.
- Nobunaga: I heard that you’re feeling better. Is it true?
- Oichi: Yes, I’m feeling better.
- Oichi: “Brother would start worrying again if I tell him the truth. I can’t increase his burden anymore.”
- Nobunaga: You have to tell me honestly if you feel any discomfort. We made a promise, remember? If you lie… the medicine will taste bitterer.
- Oichi: Brother, that’s a bit cruel! Okay, I’ve got it. Just stop treating me like a child.
- Nobunaga: Alright, I’ll come again tomorrow. Remember to take your medicine.
As Nobunaga left, the room fell back into silence and Oichi could no longer hold that hacking cough. After wiping that trickle of blood at the corner of her mouth with a handkerchief—she had done it many times— she took a sip from the bowl of medicine that had cooled off over time, her beautiful eyebrows drawn together in a frown. Looking at her reflection on the soup, she wore a bitter smile.

Next evening, the sound of children frolicking and temari balls bouncing emanated from the outside when Oichi was staring at the ceiling blankly.
- Servant: Miss Oichi, those are the servants’ children. If you find them too noisy, I can ask them to play elsewhere.
- Oichi: It’s fine. It’s good to have some sound around me. Brother and I also liked playing with balls when we were little. Brother was good at everything when it came to games while I was quite the opposite and clumsy——cough, cough.
- Servant: Miss Oichi, take your time to talk. Please take care of yourself, or else the young master will be very upset when he sees you tomorrow.
- Oichi: So Brother is not coming today?
- Servant: I’ve just been notified that the young master has run into something important so he can only come to see you tomorrow.
Although Oichi felt a little disappointed, she still smiled and showed understanding with a nod. The servant left soon after she had served Oichi dinner. There was no more gamboling sound outside the room, which just made Oichi feel very much alone.
- Oichi: “...Everything was better in the past when Brother and I could spend plenty of time together.”
- Oichi: I don’t have much time left from God so I probably can’t play and have fun with Brother again.
Indulging in memories, Oichi wasn’t aware that a plume of smoke came from a corner of the room. A man’s figure emerged under the smoke.
- Mysterious Man: That’s not quite right.
- Oichi: Who are you? How dare you trespass on the house of Oda?! Men! Someone come in quick!
- Mysterious Man: No one will come no matter how loud you yell, as long as you’re in my kekkai.
- Oichi: You——What do you want?
- Mysterious Man: Calm down, Miss Oda. It’d be bad if you get too emotional and make your condition worse. I’m here to make your wish come true.
- Oichi: What are you talking about?
- Mysterious Man: I can cure you.
- Oichi: That’s impossible. All the doctors we hired said that there is no cure for me.
- Mysterious Man: They were all incompetent quacks, but I’m different.
Suddenly, a blanket of fog rose and pulled Oichi into an illusion, in which she saw herself traveling around with her brother in a healthy body.
When Oichi was back to reality, she looked reluctant to wake up from that perfect dream that she hoped would never end.
Recalling all the good old days, Oichi bit her lip lightly and made up her mind——

In the evening when Nobunaga came to visit Oichi, he was surprised to find her playing with a temari ball alone in the courtyard.
- Nobunaga: Great! You look very well today.
- Oichi: I couldn’t be better! I feel like I can even beat you now!
- Nobunaga: Ha, let’s find out then.
Oichi, whose body had not felt so energetic for a long time, tossed the ball to Nobunaga. However, neither of the two noticed that the long silky brown hair of Oichi was tinged with bewitching silver as the full moon rose.
In addition to that, her breath became short; her face turned terribly pale with an unnatural flush rising to her cheeks. After a moment, Nobunaga finally spotted her abnormality so he hurriedly ran and checked on her with a frown.
Nobunaga held out his hand to Oichi’s forehead, trying to measure her temperature. Little did he know that Oichi’s eyes stared at his wrist where the pulsating artery lay when he reached out his arm to her.
The next second, Oichi’s eyes turned red, her pupils contracted like a beast ready to hunt. Every part of her body—her throat, her blood vessels—was screaming with hunger and thirst; all of her blood was boiling as if she was standing in burning flames.
As though Oichi felt that beating life in Nobunaga’s body, she could hear the sound of his blood flowing. In that second, countless voices sounded in Oichi’s head, repeating only one word—blood, blood, BLOOD!
- Oichi: No… NO!
- Nobunaga: Oichi? What’s wrong?
- Oichi: …Brother, I feel a bit tired. I think I should go back to my room and take a rest.
- Nobunaga: Are you okay walking back alone? I’ll go with——
- Oichi: No! I’m FINE!
At the insistence of Oichi, Nobunaga turned around and left. Oichi finally broke down and huddled up in a corner of the courtyard after seeing her brother go out of sight. However, that feeling of hunger only kept growing so she could only fill her head with different thoughts strenuously to keep her sanity. Her eyes slowly drifted as if in a trance.
- Oichi: “Just now… I wanted my brother’s blood… What has happened to my body… Someone… can someone please help me…”
Under the full moon, Oichi’s hair turned completely silver that gleamed in the night.

Worried about Oichi, Nobunaga, who had just stepped out of the house, hurriedly returned to the courtyard. However, he didn’t see her so he thought that she had returned to her room and rested. Just when he was about to leave, a smudge of white flashed and threw him to the ground with brute force.
Nobunaga wanted to draw his sword to fight back, but he found that the assailant was his beloved sister. Catching hold of Nobunaga, Oichi opened her mouth and sank her teeth into his shoulder; blood began to ooze.
Like a cub, Oichi sucked his brother’s blood. Instead of resisting, Nobunaga put up with the pain quietly until she regained consciousness.
- Oichi: I… What happened to me? Is this the price for regaining my health… That man did it…
- Nobunaga: What is happening? Tell me everything.
And so Oichi told Nobunaga every detail about her deal with that mysterious man. Nobunaga’s silence unsettled; she feared that he would show a hint of disgust. Much to her surprise, Nobunaga gave her a happy smile.
- Nobunaga: That’s good.
- Oichi: How could you say that?! I’m turning into a blood-sucking monster!
- Nobunaga: You’re not a monster. If you can stay healthy at the cost of me losing a little blood, I think it’s a good deal and it’s worth it.
- Oichi: But what if I go out of control…
Holding Oichi’s hands, Nobunaga looked her right in the eyes; his blazing gaze dispelled all the anxiety she had in her heart.
Seeing the unswerving Nobunaga, Oichi determined that one day she would no longer be her brother’s burden.
