This story happened when Tang Sanzang conducted his ascetic practice alone…
This day, Tang Sanzang came to a remote country. He learnt about the news that the queen of this land was diagnosed with a peculiar disease that put all the imperial physicians at their wits’ end. Now, a public notice was the last resort of the imperial court to solicit any physician capable. It happened that Tang Sanzang still had some elixir left, so he tore off the notice and had people tell this news to the queen at once.
Queen: What? An ascetic from the east? Humph, how could a monk without hair possibly cure my strange bald disease!?
Physician: Your majesty, you’ve already tried all the feasible medicine in the country but sadly could not see any improvement. My advice would be to summon that person for help.
Queen: Sigh, somebody come here to put on my wig. I have a person to meet.
As the queen arrived at the hall, she found Tang Sanzang not only had thick hair, but also looked attractive. The queen, therefore, had no hesitation to believe in him and take the elixir. Before long, the wig on the queen’s head rose; and her hair grew like a waterfall miraculously.
Queen: Ah...This is truly magic! I can’t believe this haunting disease only takes a second to be cured! You’ve done a fantastic job! I must reward you.
Tang Sanzang: Your majesty, I’m determined to find the Celestial Way to purify all living beings. As your majesty is also one of them, healing you is my responsibility and I don’t need any reward.
Queen: “This man has no desire for real. He’s warm plus so handsome. I want him to stay with me forever and ever!”
Queen: Purify all living beings you said. There are billions of people in the world but you happened to save me. It proves that we’re meant for each other. So I decided. I’ll make you my husband-in-law. From now on you no longer need to lead an ascetic life. Just stay with me and make me happy every day.
Tang Sanzang: Your majesty, I’m afraid it wouldn’t be possible. My devotion to the welfare of all live beings is resolute. I’ll never give up on my belief only for one person.
Queen: You...How dare you turn down the queen’s offer? I’ll send you to jail before the conclusion. Marry me or get locked up in the dark prison, it’s your choice!
So, Tang Sanzang was imprisoned in the cold, dark cell helplessly.
Tang Sanzang: I have no choice. Although I don’t want to do it by force, I can’t stay forever. I hope this won’t hurt anybody.
Tang Sanzang tightened all muscles to concentrate power on his fist. With a low roar, he punched a big hole in the wall to escape.
Guard: This is bad! Tang Sanzang GOT AWAY! Go find him!
The basilisk attacked him with its demonic power. At this critical moment, Tang Sanzang sat down to chant mantra and let his power shield himself. Basilisk’s attacks were useless to Tang Sanzang. Worse still, its attacks bounced back and hit the basilisk itself a couple times. After a few rounds, the basilisk had already exhausted itself. Then, a deafening noise sounded from above.
Basilisk: What is it?
Tang Sanzang: I’ve told the army on the shore to cut down the water flow so as to dry it up and save the queen.
Basilisk: What? Those bastards, look how I drown them with a wave...Ahh!
The basilisk’s stamina was drained. It could not even move a finger.
Tang Sanzang: By the time your strength recovers, this river will have dried up already. You and all the fish and prawns living here will also be dead. Do you really want this?
Basilisk: Damn! So be it! Take that woman and get out of here!
Tang Sanzang then brought the queen back to the shore. Everyone was cheering for the good news, but only the queen felt ashamed.
Queen: Tang Sanzang, thank you for saving me. In your eyes, am I ugly and selfish just like that basilisk?
Tang Sanzang: You don’t need to blame yourself. All you want is love, but sadly I’m just not the right person.
Queen: I understand. One day I’ll find my right man. And I wish you all the best for your mission.
With the farewell of the queen and his army, Tang Sanzang embarked on the journey again.
