Piasa was one of the three gigantic dragons Cooper created with power left by Elder Gods. He was more impetuous compared to Pilatus and Wawel, and took the role as Cooper’s guardian. During their journey, Cooper and the three dragons shared various information and opinions. Cooper had always believed in non-intervention in the realm despite possessing the Elder Gods’ power, but Piasa disagreed. He believed that they should utilize their power to help those in need.
Piasa had numerous arguments with Cooper over their use of power. Gradually, Cooper stopped discussing this with him, because she knew someday he would understand.
On one occasion, they passed by a valley and heard the howling of wolves. Piasa flew towards the sound and saw a deer being hunted by a pack of wolves. Just as the wolves were about to succeed, Piasa decided to lend the deer a hand...
Feeling threatened by Piasa, the emaciated wolves teetered away, their steps so unsteady that they might fall anytime. Piasa felt content as he saw the deer escaping safely.
Cooper: You only see the present result, but neglect what would happen in the end.
Those were the only words Cooper said to Piasa, but he failed to understand them. They continued proceeding across the valley and a few days later, they suddenly heard wolf puppies’ wails. Just then, they saw a pack of puppies grievously moaning while leaning against a wolf. The wolf was not breathing anymore; it had died some time ago.
A single glance told Piasa that this wolf was one of the pack he scared off the other day. It had been fine then; why had it died so suddenly? Cooper flew to the wolf and said while soothing the puppies:
Cooper: It hunted the deer for food. If it does not have enough food, it cannot take care of its babies.
Cooper: But because of your interference, it lost its prey, and has died of hunger. I am afraid that the puppies cannot hold on much longer...
Piasa: You have power, don’t you? Why not save them with it?
Cooper: So you still do not understand. Nature has its own way, and none should interfere with it.
Piasa stood in silence. He began to recall everything he had done...If he had not saved the deer, the wolf here would not have died of hunger. If it had not been dead, the puppies would not have lost its mother. In the end, although he thought he was a hero saving a life, but he had indirectly taken many more innocent lives.
Cooper: Although it may seem cruel when we merely observe without acting, but natural selection is the law of nature.
Cooper: Life circulates in such a way and never ends...
Regretful tears fell from Piasa’s eyes. He finally understood why Cooper had never interfered with anything in the realm. She knew that a certain level of cruelty was a necessity, and some forms of benevolence were counterproductive. Helping out of kindness would sometimes hinder nature’s normal development, and upset the balance between creatures.
Originally, Piasa could not understand why Cooper had stood aside while the strong preyed upon the weak. This did not change until he inadvertently killed a wolf family by helping a deer. This finally made him understand the rule of natural selection and the course of life. It was also because of this incident that Piasa grew more attentive to Cooper’s thoughts, and through it, he developed his own way of thinking.
Once, they saw a group of bandits assaulting a band of merchants; these bandits were in good physical health, and even if they did not engage in banditry, there was no doubt they could survive. Though still far away, Cooper conjured earth elemental power and fired it at the bandits. Pilatus also flew at them, preparing to attack. Only Piasa stood bemused. He failed to understand why Cooper acted to save the merchants and hence, questioned her with a stern tone:
Piasa: Did you not tell me to refrain from interfering with anything, because it would hinder nature’s normal development?
Cooper: The nature does indeed have its own way, but this assault here is not part of life’s cycle.
Upon hearing Cooper’s words, Piasa’s expression turned from bemusement to bafflement.
Cooper: Humans do not need mutual slaughter to survive. They are merely doing it out of self interest, and such behavior is unforgivable!
Piasa: Humans do not fight each other to survive, so we must stop this behavior?
Cooper nodded. Seeing Piasa’s knowledge grow, she could not help but smile. Piasa bellowed to the skies, and conjured fire elements before flying towards the war zone of Pilatus and the bandits...
Cooper and her companions originally intended to merely drive away the bandits while covering the merchant’s escape. Yet, they were surprised to see them draw weapons to retaliate. Unable to suppress his anger, Piasa conjured brighter and hotter fire elements onto his body, and the flames set everything ablaze. Though Pilatus and Cooper had already noticed there was something different about Piasa, they were too late to stop him...
Piasa: Stubborn rats! If I don’t teach you a lesson, you wouldn’t learn, eh?
Flames shot from Piasa, and in a split second, all around him were reduced to ashes. Seeing the sea of fire, Cooper, Pilatus and even Piasa himself were appalled.
Cooper had never thought Elder Gods’ power could be so overwhelming. She had created the three gigantic dragons for company merely out of loneliness; she did not expect them to possess the power to cause such destruction. If they do not learn to control their power, they would surely consume the realm one day...
Piasa’s sudden loss of control had caused him to conjure overwhelming fire power, instantly reducing all of the bandits to ash. Cooper was left appalled by the scene. Although she knew that having been constructed with Elder Gods’ power, the three gigantic dragons must possess immense power, but she had never imagined that such power could be so destructive. If they do not handle their power carefully, their mere existence will threaten the realms, and it was Piasa’s impetuous personality that worried Cooper most.
One silent night, when Piasa and Wawel were deeply asleep, Cooper discussed with Pilatus on how to help Piasa control his power. Pilatus thought the key to Piasa’s controlling of his own power was to teach him how to manage his emotions. Therefore, Pilatus requested Cooper for a chance to deal with this aspect of Piasa, as he already had a plan in mind...
In the following days, Pilatus and Piasa underwent a series of training, in which Piasa met different creatures and hence learnt the true meaning of life. Moreover, he learnt to master fire element from fire elves. Seeing Piasa’ s progress, Pilatus deemed it time to give Piasa the final test.
Pilatus brought Piasa to a place with nothing but sand. Just as Piasa was wondering what to do, Pilatus said:
Pilatus: Conjure fire elements and attack me!
Piasa: What? Are you insane?
Pilatus: I told you to attack me! Which word of that did you not understand? If you do not attack me, I will do it to myself!
Pilatus slid his claws across his own neck; blood gushed out of the wound.
Pilatus’ threat with his own life had left Piasa with no choice but to conjure fire elements and attack Pilatus. Upon hearing the enormous blast, Cooper and Wawel hurried to the source of the sound. Not knowing what had happened, they were shocked to see Pilatus engulfed by blazing fire.
Just then, Pilatus’ laughter emerged from within the flames. With a swing from his tail, Pilatus extinguished the fire that had enveloped him. Not a trace of the burn remained, as if the fire had never existed, and all was a mere hallucination. Even Piasa himself was stunned; his expression showed that he also failed to comprehend what had happened.
Pilatus: Just as I have suspected. Piasa’s fire is linked with his heart.
Pilatus: Whether it is a scorching blaze or pleasant bonfire — Piasa’s heart is the key.
Although this proved that their power was closely related to their heart, Cooper and the likes could not help but be livid at Pilatus. If his hypothesis was wrong, he could have been killed. Cooper sternly scolded Pilatus at first, but when Piasa and Wawel pretended to teach him a lesson and started a friendly wrestling match, she could not help but burst into laughter.
Sounds of their joy filled the forest. Back then, they had thought they were going to stay together forever, and such happy times will never end. What they did not know was that the misery of fate was about to strike out of nowhere...
As their journey progressed, Wawel requested to leave his companions and explore the realm by himself because he wanted to better learn about it. Pilatus had been close to Cooper, so he was never interested in parting. And Piasa also chose to stay by Cooper, but it was not merely because of their relationship; rather, it was his recognition of Cooper’s ideas that prompted his eagerness to stay, and continue learning from her.
Some time later, they were assaulted by the other guardian created by the Elder Gods — Fafnir. Fafnir had initially wanted Cooper to eradicate Humans with her, but Cooper had rejected her. Therefore, Fafnir now attempted to compel Cooper’s surrender of the Elder Gods’ gemstones. However, she failed to notice that the two dragons by Cooper’s side were actually the creations of two of the gemstones.
To protect Cooper, Pilatus and Piasa had wanted to fight, but were stopped by Cooper herself. She realized that if they fought wielding Elder Gods’ power, the forces involved would likely destroy the realm…Left without a choice, Cooper could only murmur a spell and seal the dragons back into the gemstones. They then scattered and launched themselves to different places upon the completion of the spell. As the vessel of Elder Gods’ fiery power, Piasa was attracted by intense fire elements and descended upon a land of extreme drought.
Later, a group of merchants happened upon Piasa while he was in gemstone form, and thus, they sold it to an auction house. Because the gemstone was crimson like blood but extraordinarily translucent, it received an extremely high bid in its first auction. The first owner of Piasa was a tycoon, but he soon went broke because of unforeseen loss in an investment, so he resold Piasa.
Over the coming years, Piasa was circulated among tycoons, each of them losing all their fortunes because of impetuous mistakes. Piasa was then named “the ruby of misfortune”, and none dared bid for it ever again. Everyone was afraid to lose all they had because of the gemstone and hence, no one called for a bid in the auction this time...
Although Piasa didn’t mind to be called “the ruby of misfortune”, he did concern whether he could continue his adventure in the realm of Humans. That was also why he began to be worried; if no one buys him, does it mean that his journey has come to an end?
Just as Piasa thought none would buy him, a demure voice suddenly rang out:
Lady: Ten Thousand Coins!
Enjoying an uncontested bid, the lady bought the gemstone with ease. She handed it to a little girl and asked her to keep it, saying that it might save her someday. On their way home, the little girl fell asleep in the car. The lady took the gemstone without waking her, and lightly stroked it while murmuring:
Lady: Though I do not know what you are, but if anything happens, can you please take care of my daughter for me?
Lady: My instincts are telling me that something is going to happen soon. But by then, I will not be able to handle it.
Piasa could not understand her words, let alone answer to her request. Later, he was kept in Wonderland, and was left forgotten. It was not until he heard the song of Cooper did his seal that had endured for decades break...
