The food stored in the hold was running out. The cook went to the deck in annoyance. He looked far into the distance, but he could only see a vast expanse of whiteness. The whole vessel was covered with fog, and this exasperated him.
Cook: Let’s go back! We cannot hold out any longer with our supplies.
Cook: Just let those crazy scholars get themselves killed if they want to.
Cook: I don’t wanna die here.
Captain: Darn, we have almost given away our lives.
Captain: If we get out of the heavy fog, we will start sailing back.
The crew consisted of a cook, a captain, and two sailors recruited especially for this trip. They were hired and lured by enthusiastic adventurers for a considerable reward; together, they had already been at sea for more than a month.
The adventurers’ hearts were as heavy as those of the crew. They gathered on deck. Whenever there was seaweed floating on the water, they would look at it carefully, in hopes of finding the legendary island.
A dark-green glint came out from the fog. This did not help light up the ship’s way, but turned the fog into green colour. The ship was going in an unknown direction, and a pale-coloured gas filled the air. An unpleasing noise came out of the bottom of the ship as the keel scratched the bottom of the sea. In order to prevent themselves from inhaling the unknown gas, the adventurers covered their mouths and noses with their hands. At the same time, some of them curiously picked up stones curiously and played with them in their hands.
As the adventurers traced their fingers through the slits on the stones, the fog in the air was pulled towards the stone as if it was attracted by gravity. Then, the stones lightly vibrated and the rust on them disappeared. As the traces of aging on the stones vanished, the adventurers threw them away in fear, but they could not get rid of the consciousness that resided within the stones. The crew members felt as if a sleeping monster was stretching its tentacles towards them.
Adventurers: Where are we?
The crew members on board panicked. The ship drifted forward uncontrolledly due to its inertia. It finally crashed into a reef and broke into pieces. The fates of the crew members were uncertain.
People kept disappearing in the mysterious region which actually made the region more appealing as people were increasingly excited about the dangers. Each time, people on land would build even larger ships, send even more knowledgeable scholars, and even better navigators to sail to the mysterious region — the expense of which is blood.
Whenever there were survivors returning , scholars about to journey to the region would ask about what had happened. The survivors could always clearly tell others everything which occurred before they entered the region, but when they tried to describe the terrifying experience they had there, they would shiver and lose the ability to speak. The only sound they could muster was a strange growl instead.
Once, a scholar of antiquity tried to help the crew shake off their illusions. The side of the ship was made of refined steel. Soldiers covered in full armors joined the crew, proceeded to the island by ship and finally, they successfully landed on the misty island.
The island was covered with shipwrecks and human skeletons. They soon discovered a gate, on which a creature with tentacles and closed eyes was carved. The creature seemed to be capable of standing, but it was sitting on a big rock, its octopus-like head lowered. The crew members were observing the carvings on the gate, but a warrior suddenly pushed it open, and from behind the gate came the noise made by the awakened monster.
Crew member: The monster has awakened. Return to the ship, now!
Warrior: We’re not leaving. It’s time for revenge.
Warrior: This is the monster which swallowed our father and brothers.
The Pawn of Water: Darn, we couldn’t even harm it.
The Pawn of Fire: We will fight to the end.
The Pawn of Fire: Think about the silver lining. At least we can now be reunited with our family.
After the evil god had consumed enough warriors, it returned to the depths behind the gate. Those who survived had lost all their memories. They were speaking in a terrifying language. Fear spread through the city like a pandemic. The weak-willed lost their mind and many went crazy. The nobles of the realm grouped the affected together and monitored them. They also ordered that shipping entering or leaving a port be registered and all adventures were prohibited, so that the terrifying mysterious region disappeared on the map of the realm of men.
There are things the existence of which could not be traced. Their origin is one with the sky and earth, and their age is one with sun and the moon. It is just like one's inability to explain one's existence. Since the first time we opened our eyes, we are here, and so as the world.
The existence of Cthulhu remained a mystery. It hid itself in the deep sea. To it, the world was just the image it saw the instant it opened its eyes. It seemed to be waiting for the moment when the stars were just right. As long as that moment had not arrive, it would not die; however, it was not really alive. Cthulhu was in its deep sleep in the mysterious region of the realm of men.
The ancient power had always protected Cthulhu, so that it would not easily be attacked, but the power also prevented it from leaving its own territory. Cthulhu would only open its eyes when there were intruders. After consuming the trespasser, it would close its eyes again. Cthulhu had been living like this until its sleep was disrupted by the God.
Poseidon, God of the Sea: There could only be one ruler of the seas .
Poseidon, God of the Sea: Hand over your power. So every creature of the sea shall obey me.
Cthulhu had been sleeping in the almost endless river of time. However, Poseidon could not be destroyed easily and Poseidon could not defeat it as well. Even so, Poseidon kept challenging the evil god. Annoyed, the powerful evil god let him cut down its tentacles, which were regenerated later, so that the evil blood coming out from its wounds would poison him and drive him mad, so that he would leave its realm. But the poison accidentally helped Poseidon control his leaking godly power, so that he had become the ruler of the ocean in the ancient human era.
As Gods and Demons crisscrossed the realm of men, they fought each other many times. Scholars of ancient humans were replaced with priests. They had witnessed a few wars between the two clans and they had gradually learned the way to control the power of the Elder Gods. In the wars, the priests applied their own power to achieve their own goals. They joined different parties and slaughtered each other.
Among these priests, there was a rising generation, who chose to stay away from the wars and to delve into history in search of the Elder Gods’ power. Some of those priests placed all their hope of ending the war in the Elder Gods; some even wished that the Elder Gods would take them away to a peaceful land created just for them.
A group of priests went to the mysterious region where the evil god resided with the graphs of magic circles they stole. They studied thousands of ancient records and finally arrived. They thought Cthulhu’s island home lived was the source of power with which the Elder Gods used to create the world.
On the island, limbs of ancient adventurers dismembered by the evil god remained where they fell. Years had past but there was no sign of decomposition on the limbs. The priests used these as their sacrifice and set up an altar on the gate carved with the emblem of the evil god. They stood in a circle, articulating incomprehensible labials. Reverberations echoed up from underwater.
: The priests summoned Cthulhu.
: But the flawed prayers did not wake up Cthulhu.
: The priests drew the Misty Ethereal Dragon,
: which was just the incarnation of the Elder God.
: The Ethereal Dragon answered the priests’ call.
: Its force clashed with the ancient power guarding Cthulhu.
