Chapter 15　The Foolish Love

Story

However, Huaxi, as always, used his unreserved offensive to smash through the defense that Feiyin had set up——At dawn, the rumbling from outside made Feiyin, who was in the palace, stand up in shock. Simultaneously, Chimeng rushed inside in a hurry.

Chimeng: Feiyin! The Petrogons came again! They’re setting the city on fire!

Feiyin: Go tell Fushi to stay behind and protect the queen. You and Luomo come with me.

Feiyin, Chimeng and Luomo transformed into their bird forms, soaring into the mid-air in the center of the city. By that time, Huaxi, Miaosha and Huailing were already waiting.

Miaosha: Finally, you’re here. I’m super drowsy from waking up that early.

Luomo: Well, why don’t you three go back home and have a good rest. Doesn’t it sound good?

Huailing: Sorry, I’m not used to an afternoon nap.

Chimeng: Humph! Don’t waste your breath on them, Luomo. Cut to the chase and bring it on!

Miaosha: Wow, this young lady is scary. I’m so scared, so I’ll leave her to you, Huailing. Sister Miaosha will be dating with the little brother on that side.

Despite Miaosha’s frivolous attitude, she deliberately assigned Huailing to deal with Chimeng because the former was weaker than Luomo. In a split second, the four were having an intense battle with each other, while Feiyin and Huaxi remained quiet as they looked into each other’s eyes.

Feiyin took the lead to flap her iridescent wings, rushing to Huaxi as fast as a shooting star.

But this was just the beginning. Feiyin’s unruly and unpredictable attacks continued to push on. However, all of the strikes were deliberately non-lethal, as if her affection for him was still lingering.

Facing Feiyin’s loss of control, Huaxi did not fight back, accepting the dark yet fragile part of her silently. He took all the attacks and endured all the pain, like a tide swallowing Feiyin’s love, hatred, anger and foolishness.

Bang! With a brutal attack, Huaxi was bashed to the ground and was coughing up blood.

Huaxi: Cough!

Feiyin: ...Huaxi

The blow was too heavy that Huaxi was unable to hold back his groan, which also awakened Feiyin’s sealed heart. She lost, once again defeated by his unconditional love and deep affection.

She fell helplessly, turning back into her human form right before the landing. She knelt down and dropped her slender shoulders. Tears started running down, one after one like beads falling out of a broken thread, melting her coldness and indifference she had been faking all along.

Feiyin: Why...why did you take them all...why...did you still come...Idiot…

Huaxi: Feiyin...Feiyin...

Huaxi, in his human form, dragged his injured body towards her. He called Feiyin’s name with a low, hoarse voice along with every step he took. The calls delivered his sentiments, love and compassion…, which touched the bottom of Feiyin heart, recalling all the sweetness from the past.

Feiyin knew that she must leave, but her heart refused to compromise. Trapped by the web of love, she could not help but watch Huaxi kneel down before her. His lips went pale due to the loss of blood, but he was still as good-looking as she remembered, and as warm and bright as sunshine.

The heat in Feiyin’s heart made her arch her back, but the fixed, passionate gaze of Huaxi froze her motions. She trembled lightly.

Huaxi: It’s because I love you. I love you so much.

Feiyin’s eyelashes flickered; tears welled up in her eyes. The corner of her eyes turned red because of her long-suppressed bitterness and sorrow. Huaxi, unable to hold it anymore, brought Feiyin into his arms and whispered into her ears in a low voice.

Huaxi: I love you. Despite my aching heart, I can’t bear to see you suffer.

Feiyin: ...I...don’t deserve it…

Huaxi: Yes you do...Feiyin. Even if you hate me, I’m willing to accept everything as long as you’re safe and sound.

Feiyin: Huaxi——

Before Feiyin finished the sentence, an ominous sound was sent from the sky. Noticing that something was off, Huaxi looked at the palace on the hillside and found a crimson light glittering over the sky.

Huaxi: Not something I had expected...Did Jichen get into an accident?

When he was about to set off, Feiyin’s peculiar face pulled him back ——A crimson pattern appeared on her forehead, pulsing vividly as if sucking up her blood. In agony, Feiyin’s face was as pale as a piece of paper. Her body was shaking and covered in cold sweat.

Huaxi: Feiyin!

Feiyin: Ugh!

Huaxi: “Elements...The elements in her body are draining away...She’ll die if this goes on!”

Huaxi stuck his forehead against the bright red dot on Feiyin's. Triggering the Lumin, he endured the excruciating pain in his chest and held her cheeks with both hands, carefully examining such a cold beauty. The tenderness in his heart is heating up again.

Huaxi: Feiyin, I won’t let you die. I’ll protect you at all costs.

Blinding lights emitted from Huaxi’s chest, covering that ominous crimson that was cast into the sky...

Chapter 16　Seesaw Battle

Story

In the inner hall of the palace of Yamatai, wisps of smoke rose slowly from a copper-made incense burner, immersing the room with a tranquil scent. In spite of that, Himiko, who was sitting on the throne, was not able to calm down. She kept looking at the front door from time to time, and her movements occasionally froze because of the clashes outside.

Servant Isuzu came to serve her a cup of tea, putting it onto a small table with her signature smile.

Isuzu: Worry not, Your Majesty. Master Feiyin and the others were adept at battles. They will be fine.

Fushi, who was guarding the door, turned around too with an indescribable pride on his frivolous face.

Fushi: Of course, we Featherettes will never lose!

Himiko: Right, Feiyin won’t——Ahh!

Isuzu: Your Majesty!

Himiko: The...barrier...someone broke the barrier from the interior..They’re outside the palace gate...Fushi, come with me!

Himiko suppressed the discomfort that hit her chest, and ran outside the palace with Fushi. Without having to look around, they saw a magic circle floating in mid-air right in front of the long staircase. Inside the barrier, Ingrid was holding her magic staff while Enoch was guarding the outside.

Fushi: You again!

Enoch: Yes, it’s us again!

Himiko: Enoch...didn’t I request you to abort the commission and go back?

Enoch: Your Majesty, we’ve already accomplished your commission. The barrier was actually broken by the Petrogons.

Himiko: Is that so...but what I see is that you are breaking it.

Enoch: We took up a new commission from the Petrogons. They sought our help in breaking the barrier.

Himiko: Why...what has Yamatai done to deserve this!?

Enoch: It’s because——

Fushi: Your Majesty! Stop listening to their bullcrap! Whoever breaks the magic barrier shall be our enemies! Let me deal with them!

Fushi did not want Enoch to tell the truth, so he took the lead to pounce on Enoch by switching back to his bird form, but another shadow dived down from mid-air to capture him in advance.

Jichen: Your opponent is me, Featherette!

Fushi: Tut! Get lost!

While the two were battling, Ingrid was concentrating on casting a magic spell. In front of the staircase outside the palace, only Enoch and Himiko had a face-off.

The day dawned, but the sky was covered by heavy clouds. The firelight in the city was full of paradoxical tranquility, which matched the atmosphere when Enoch first stepped into the country of Yamatai. It also corresponded with Himiko’s air of melancholic innocence.

Suddenly, some sort of curious intuition flickered in Enoch’s chest. His heart pounded as he looked into the depths of Himiko’s eyes.

Enoch: Your Majesty, you remember it, don’t you? The kingdom of Yamatai had been annihilated. Your mother had died in the battle——

Himiko: Shut up! I say SHUT UP! Mother will be back! Everyone will also be fine, as long as I keep doing it!

Enoch: It’s impossible! They’re gone. The deceased will never come back to life. Stop lying to yourself! If you keep burying your head in the sand, you’ll only lose more and more important people around you!

Himiko: Enough! I’m the queen of Yamatai! How dare you!

In denial, Himiko casted magic attack on Enoch, but her inexperience in combat soon put her at a disadvantage as her adversary was the experienced Enoch.

Nevertheless, an arrow shot through the air from the front of the palace straight to Enoch’s back. Ingrid, who was standing in the magic spell, shouted at once.

Ingrid: Enoch

Cling! The arrow was fended off by a sword. Someone came to Enoch from behind.

Isuzu: Iyo, what a bad girl you are to sneak out and even go against me.

Iyo was imprisoned in the guest room of the palace as she had assisted Enoch and Ingrid in their escape. She managed to get away while the garrison became loosened due to Huaxi’s ambush. By sheer coincidence Iyo saw Isuzu’s sneak attack on Enoch, therefore she rushed to help.

Enoch: ...Aren’t you a servant…?

Isuzu: As a servant of Her Majesty, combat skills are more or less necessary.

Isuzu answered gracefully with a smile. Then she pulled the bow back again, menace filling her beautiful eyes. But this time, she aimed at Ingrid instead. Perceiving her murderous intention, Iyo tightened her grip on the sword.

Iyo: Enough, Isuzu! Stop it!

Isuzu: Not a chance...I won’t let anyone destroy the palace of the queen.

Chapter 17　The Counter Effect

Story

Knowing that Isuzu could not be pacified, Iyo sprinted by and pointed her sword at the bow of Isuzu with great speed. Just as the string was about to be cut off, Isuzu strode forward and turned around. The sword pierced into her back.

Iyo wanted to pull the sword out, but Isuzu held it with muscles while her posture remained still. Then she released her hand as soon as she had her body stabilized; the arrow targeted Ingrid’s chest shot out like a shooting star.

Enoch: NO!

Holding his breath, Enoch reached out to grab the arrow, but eventually only his fingertips could make it, slightly changing its trajectory to Ingrid's left shoulder. The strength of the arrow was so powerful that it pushed Ingrid out of the magic circle and flung her to the ground.

Ingrid: Ah!

Enoch: Ingrid

Enoch's expression changed abruptly; he hurried over to help. Aware of the blood which had soaked Ingrid's clothes, Enoch’s heart was charged with anxiety. Ingrid knew Enoch was worried about herself, but since time was running short, she endured the pain and grabbed his sleeves.

Ingrid: I’m alright...But the spell hasn’t——

Before Ingrid finished her words, an ominous trembling noise sounded. A bizarre dark-purple light started gleaming in the magic spell, which turned into a glittering beam surging up into the sky. When it reached mid-air, it produced a loud “dang”, as if colliding with something solid.

With the sound of the impact, the purple beam soon dissipated, leaving the gloomy sky to be dyed with vermilion, neon-like glow, which forecast danger. Before everyone could react, lightning strikes hit Himiko all of a sudden.

Himiko: AHHHH——！

Struck by the crimson thunder, Himiko screamed in pain, with that bright red pattern appearing on forehead. The grass around her withered as if its vitality was taken away.

Enoch: This is...the counter effect of the magic...to such a severe extent...

Enoch: “Ingrid’s spell to break the time magic was released before it was complete, so only a part of the time magic was broken; in order to repair itself, the magic had to absorb the elements of Himiko the enchanter.”

Ingrid: Gotta...stop it...Otherwise Himiko...will be in danger…

Enoch: “But my elemental power will be drained if I approach it...Even so——Huh?”

When Enoch was still hesitating, someone walked into the perimeter of the crimson thunder, out of everyone’s expectation. Regardless of danger, he came to Himiko step by step——it was Jichen in his human form.

Jichen got down on one knee; his expression used to be gentle yet indifferent, but now it changed—he raised his eyebrows smugly and lifted the corner of his lip to ask.

Jichen: Look at you, little coward.

Himiko, who managed to open her eyes in pain, looked at Jichen. In astonishment, she forgot the physical pain she was putting up with temporarily. Himiko said slowly.

Himiko: You...cocky brother…

Jichen: Right, here I am, kiddo.

Memories of the past flashed in the eyes of Jichen and Himiko…

Chapter 18　The Evil Inside

Story

In the early morning of a sunny day, two dragon shadows flew through the clouds, eventually landing into the dense woods. A moment later, two men walked out of the forest, slowly coming to a small yet prosperous country——Kingdom of Yamatai.

The time was still early, the people on the streets of Yamatai were sparse, and only a few breakfast stalls were in business. The early diners all fixed their gazes on the two good-looking men walking from the city gate——Huaxi and Jichen in their human forms.

Huaxi seemed to be very tired, holding the back of his head with one hand and yawning with another hand covering his mouth. His frivolous attitude formed a stark contrast with Jichen’s robust and graceful posture.

Huaxi: Jichen, I told you it’s too early for us to come. The sellers won't be open until the afternoon.

Jichen: We do the procurement only once every six months. The early bird gets the worm.

Every six months, the Petrogons will send a representative to human countries to purchase necessities. The appointee must be the strongest Petrogon recognized by the clan. In the past, Jichen had always come alone, but this time he was accompanied by Huaxi for a special reason.

However, Huaxi had shown little interest in this matter. He kept yawning while walking into an empty narrow alley, and then lay down under an old tree. Jichen, standing in front of him, looked at Huaxi helplessly.

Jichen: What are you doing?

Huaxi: Napping. The stores haven’t opened...yet...

Huaxi fell asleep before he had finished speaking, so he was unaware of the disappearance of Jichen’s gentle smile, which added to his chiseled face a trace of sharp coldness.

Jichen: ...It hurts…

Jichen gripped the clothes on his chest, where he felt a heart-wrenching pain. This had happened from time to time since three months ago, as if reminding him of that irreversible fact.

這個事實此刻也和過去無數個無眠夜一樣，化成夢魘敲打糾纏著姬臣的內心，幽怨的沙啞嗓音在姬臣的意識中輕聲細語。

???: “It hurts, doesn’t it?”

Jichen: Yes, physically and mentally.

???: “It must be more than that...You even feel the hatred.”

Jichen: “...”

???: “I’m you, and you’re me. I know you perfectly. Admit it. You have immense hatred for this young but powerful Petrogon before you.”

Jichen: “Yes, of course I do...I had already told him it was dangerous there, but he refused to listen. In the end, I had to clean up his mess.”

???: “Your Lumin was damaged because of him. You lost the glory of being the strongest. And the most ridiculous thing is that this kid, afraid of taking away your reputation, deliberately became frivolous, lazy and unskilled. He pities you, because you’re useless and disabled.”

Jichen: “I don’t need his compassion...It disgusts me!”

???: “Truly, doesn’t it? His pity is such an insult to your pride. Now, it’s your chance.”

Jichen: His existence forces me into self-pity. Only if he disappears can my hatred and grievances be settled...Only by killing him!

Intense menace beclouded Jichen’s mind, turning the gentleness on his face to terrifying ferocity; he became a monster dominated by hatred, except his eyes were filled with the antithesis of animosity—pain and sorrow.

Jichen put his hand close to Huaxi's fragile neck, but found that the top of his head suddenly darkened. Caught off guard, Jichen was pressed against his back by a heavy force——Someone jumped down from above to hold him down.

Furious, Jichen wanted to grab the assailant on his back backhanded, but that person was so agile that he crawled under him with a shout.

???: You-you-you——Please don’t kill me for being a witness!

Huaxi: Hmm...

The dispute between Jichen and the assailant seemed to have disturbed Huaxi’s sleep. Jichen became stiff as if his intention was exposed, and the attacker planned to take advantage of this to flee. However, Jichen had already woken up. He took swift action to intercept the attacker and held his neck from behind with both arms.

Jichen: Ah!

However, the attacker did not surrender; instead, he gave a rough bite on Jichen’s forearm which cut through his skin and flesh. The smell of blood drifted in the air, but Jichen resisted the pain and dragged the attacker forcibly to a far corner before letting go.

Jichen: Get lost!

???: NO!

Hearing this stubborn response, Jichen could not help lowering his head to glare at the attacker——a petite girl about 10 years old. She was trying to look austere with her childish face, but she looked like a kitten waving her paws at best.

For some reason, her ridiculous look relieved Jichen’s anger, replaced it by an indescribable sense of absurdity and sorrow. With a mocking grin, he picked on this little girl in a sarcastic manner.

Jichen: Don’t worry. I’m not interested in killing him anymore.

???: No! I...I’m worrying about you!

Jichen: ...How foolish are you to worry about a murderer…

???: Coz...you...you’re murdering yourself!

Chapter 19　Defeat Hatred

Story

???: Coz...you...you’re murdering yourself!

After listening to what she had said, Jichen first had a momentary heartache, then burst into laughter.

Jichen: Are you blind?

???: I’m neither blind nor foolish...It’s you who is being too weak and useless!

Jichen: ...Looks like I’m too lenient with you, presumptuous kiddo.

Irritated by the girl, Jichen tried to intimidate her with his furious gaze which was as sharp as a blade, but this little girl was not frightened at all. She straightened up her slender back as if confronting Jichen. Without flinching, she looked into his eyes directly.

???: Why did you look so painful if killing him would make you happy? What made you hesitate? In fact, you don’t really want to kill him. You’re simply defeated by hatred!

Jichen: Defeated?

I once said the same thing as you did at that time. “Only by killing that person can my hatred and grievances be settled.”

Back when the girl inadvertently heard someone say so, she felt a sharp awl piercing into her heart. She turned her head with widened eyes, hoping to find out who was repeating what she had said in the past. Then she saw Jichen, who was about to kill Huaxi.

She had never seen him before, but the aura he exuded was somehow familiar. It was hatred, devastating enough to annihilate everything. That’s why she decided to stop Jichen’s murderous intention immediately.

???: My father...was killed by a general of the nation nearby. I used to let hatred swallow me, allowing it to take control and let it be the only reason I’m living for. It’s my mother who woke me up.

???: She said hatred is understandable, but you can’t be defeated by it! If you attribute all the responsibility to hatred and go against your conscience, then you’re a weak person, a loser!

The girl’s wisdom had enlightened Jichen’s mind and body. As if thunderstruck, Jichen felt that the pain of depression bulging in his chest since the day of injury seemed to have been pierced by a needle, slowly flowing out.

“Right...My inner devil...the whispers...these are essentially just my cowardice...Huaxi pities me all because of my failure to let go...and my pain…

Jichen: “Killing Huaxi to become the strongest is not something I would do…Even with the injury, I won’t be defeated. Even with the injury, I still have to live up to the glory of the strongest. This is me, Jichen the Petrogon…”

Jichen first chuckled, then burst into laughter for some reason. Uneasy, the girl poked him with her finger.

???: Have you...truly gone mad?

Jichen: Of course not...Sigh, can’t believe I was talked down to by a kiddo, how ironic.

???: Wh-what! I-I’m not a kiddo! I got a name! Him...Himy!

Himy was so angry that she raised her head with arms akimbo, and made Jichen see the red mark on her neck——it was left by him when he grabbed her back then. Jichen’s eyes dimmed as he asked guiltily in a muffled voice.

Jichen: Your neck...did it hurt?

Himy: Yes, but I didn’t surrender!

She pointed at the bleeding wound on Jichen’s forearm with a proud smile, which made Jichen curl his lip for her playfulness.

Jichen: Oh, you’re right. You’re not a kiddo but a glutton.

Himy: What glutton!? I’m not——

However, the gurgling sound sent from her stomach proved otherwise and made Himy blush in embarrassment. Amused, Jichen did not laugh out loud, but contained the laughs in his eyes and brows; Himy was even more embarrassed.

Himy: I-I-I-I just forgot to have breakfast——Hmm!

While Himy was trying to explain, Jichen stuffed something into her mouth quickly. A wonderful sweetness spread over Himy’s taste buds; her eyes were lit up by this delicacy.

Jichen: Hang in there. I’ll take you to breakfast.

Himy: ...I want more of that!

Jichen: No, unless you want a bad tooth. Let’s go.

Jichen took Himy’s hand to the street naturally, had breakfast with her and the two wandered around the city hand in hand. Although it was the first time the two travelled together, they trusted each other as if there was an ineffable understanding between them.

Both of them were once defeated by hatred. In their first encounter, amidst a fierce battle, they had also forged a strong bond between each other that others could not possibly intervene. Time passed as the two competed and quarreled with each other the whole day. The sky gradually turned yellow, and the sun was setting.

Himy: Phew, what fun we had! It’s time for me to go back.

Jichen: Fun to be defeated, right?

Himy: Wh-what! You’re older than me. Of course you know more tricks!

Jichen: Ha, so you admitted you’re a kiddo when you can turn it to your advantage?

Jichen smiled as he rubbed Himy’s hair. As much as she wanted to resist, Jichen could easily handle her due to the huge difference in their height. Therefore, Himy had no choice but to let him do it, with a pout on her face. Suddenly, he stopped. The twilight was casted on Jichen’s handsome face; his gaze was filled with dynamic sincerity.

Jichen: Himy, thank you for stopping me.

Himy: Finally you’re appreciating my kindness. Humph, since I’m a generous person, your gratitude is hereby accepted.

Jichen: You kiddo...Hahaha…

Laughing without restraint, Jichen eventually was able to get rid of the moroseness which had haunted him for months. Embraced by the romantic orange sunset glow, Jichen got down on one knee, held up her little hand to kiss it softly as he made a vow.

Jichen: I’m willing to devote my Lumin to you, wishing you happiness and luck.

Himy: Wh-wh-what are you doing!? You cocky guy!

Seeing her shy face, Jichen could not help laughing again. This day they bid farewell to each other in a frolic atmosphere. However, by the time they met again, things had completely changed…
