On an altar, a scarred and bruised warrior laid quietly. There were myriad wounds of varying severity on his body, innumerable that they seemed to have been inflicted postmortem — He was supposed to be dead, but Odin had sealed his soul within the body with power of Gods, so he could not fully die.
: Sir, I —
: I know, Idun. You cannot completely control your power yet.
: Take this as a practice.
: But — I cannot undo death!
: He is not dead yet.
: Odin, you are being unreasonable!
: Idun, your power will accompany you for life.
: Regardless of your will, you need to adapt and practice it.
: Mr. Odin, you did not mean what you said...
: No matter how much effort you make, she will not forgive you.
: I understand. I do not ask forgiveness. It is merely a selfish request;
: I want this honorable soul to remain in the world.
: Is that so...
: Then let’s pretend I am doing this under orders.
: As you wish;
: I, commander of the North, and leader of the clans, order you:
: Save this warrior.
: Has the power of Gods reaped your manners, commander?
: Idun, my armor is too heavy. I am unable to kneel anymore.
However, the warrior did not return from death. Instead, he became trapped, aging in reverse, and gradually turned into a child. At the moment, Idun knew what the Divine Tree had given was not a blessing. Since then, she avoided the use of the golden apple’s power and this remained unchanged until Loki showed up and asked for her favor...
When Idun returned with the golden apple, she could not find Angrboda. But she heard that Loki’s family had left for unpopulated areas because of Angrboda’s illness.
When Idun lay eyes on Loki’s daughter, she could not hold back her tears. The child was skinny and weak while her legs appeared like dried branches. It was palpably the consequence of the curse. Loki told Idun that her daughter inherited it from Angrboda. In the matter of days, she would die of the curse, like her mother. It was an inalienable duty for Idun. She asked Loki to prepare the magic circle while she went to Eostre for her help in suppressing the curse. Even though the power of the golden apple was yet to be comprehended, she decided to use it to heal the girl.
Loki: Hel, Hel!
Seeing his girl opening her eyes, Loki excitedly hugged her, who just escaped her fated death. The exhausted Idun cracked a smile as she looked at the reunion. That was a great cost to save the girl from the curse.
: Loki, this comes with a price. Her body is still cur —
Eostre: Idun, you —
In Eostre’s scream, Idun found herself shrinking. She thought back of Odin’s warrior and was struck by the possibility of returning to a baby. She could not stand the impact and fainted —
Eostre: No matter what you turn into, don’t forget who you were.
: I am not even a person now!
Eostre: Has anyone ever thought of me as a monster?
Even though Eostre only appeared in Springs, people loved this maiden. Of course, part of the reason was for her power of life —
: But...this power, what should I do with it?
Eostre taught Idun how to channel her power. After turning numerous pieces of fruit back into seeds, Idun finally became familiarized with her power. She directed such power into the fruit to avoid being consumed by the golden apple. To help with the wars, she distributed the fruit to warriors, including Loki. The ever younger warriors were deemed as Gods —
: Loki? What are you doing here?
: Nothing. Just getting a piece of fruit.
: But didn’t the guards —
Guard: Miss Idun! Stop him!
: Pardon me, Idun.
Nevertheless, what they defeated was merely an illusion. The real Loki had laid hands on the fruit, which prolonged his tragedy...
: Seize the moment and subdue the Dragon of Poison!
The chaos on the battlefield startled Idun. She had never been to the battlefront. The smell of blood and sweat nauseated her. However, when Idun was pushed to the face of the Dragon of Poison, she felt different. The trapped dragon rotted alone, its frightening roar reminiscent of a painful wail.
Soldiers: We did it!
: Idun, the credit goes to you!
: No. The credit goes to Angrboda.
: ‘But no one remembers her.’
After Hel’s death, Idun kept her promise and continued to maintain the power of the golden apple. However, she no longer shared any of her fruit. She only stayed in the garden of Holylight City, playing with the animals.
Loki later broke the seal of the Dragon of Poison. Odin’s hasty seal was not perfect, so Idun had to feed the dragon in the tower when it woke up from time to time...
: Sacrifice for the world? No. It is just there is no other thing worth doing.
Now, Idun could master her power. She granted the animals an immortal body so they could escort her to the tower.
Immortal life bored Idun. Sometimes, she would want to give up, letting the power of longevity consume herself. However, she had no way to transfer the power. Unable to bear abandoning the power of the golden apple, Idun could only live on. She was not happy, but she could not cry of sadness. People always asked her for blessing; the kindhearted Idun began to realize: she was merely an immortal servant for all.
