Apollo used to dote upon Artemis like the sun shines over the earth. Since their youth, they had been inseparable. In their childhood, Artemis had supported Apollo, who had been weak. After they had grown up, Apollo brought Artemis with him to hunt. Artemis could not stay away from Apollo, until Zeus took him away from her.
After Apollo had gone, color had effectively disappeared from Artemis’ sight. Whenever she moved, she could only see some blurred images, with lights flashing in front. She always drew the bow that Apollo left her, and shot the residual lights in her eyes meaninglessly until the night fell.
The mountains were black while the water was white. These were the only two colors that Artemis could distinguish. At night-time, everything was less complicated for her than in the daytime. She felt the cool as she walked towards a shimmering place. In a clear stream, she washed her long hair and spoke to herself when facing the mountains and waters.
Artemis: I have to cross over this mountain, leave the island and go to land.
Artemis: It’s always daytime there.
Artemis: I must go forward in a faster pace, otherwise the night falls.
Artemis’ perception of day and night was completely inverted from normal people. She could not feel the warmth in daytime. Only the moon could bathe her in a pleasant light. She slept during the daytime, and journeyed at night-time.
Artemis: Keep going towards the bright place, then I can reunite with my brother.
I am the guardian of night, the arrow in darkness. Until death, I will never cease. I shall remain pure: no desire for land, no ambition for power. Born for the job, die on my job. I am the arrow in darkness, the guard of citadel, and an eye on the Gods . Now and forever.
Artemis practised archery very hard and embarked on a journey without a particular direction. One day, she skulked in the forest waiting for prey, with an arrow nocked on the bowstring as usual. Then, a beast passed by. Artemis quickly shot the arrow and hit the target at its leg. She stood up straight from the bush and walked to the prey.
Man: I’ve never made an enemy. Why are you ambushing me in the dark?
Man: Are you unable to speak?
Artemis tried hard to recall the words in her language. As she had not spoken to anyone for a long time, she was tongue-tied.
: It’s... night?
Man: You have great strength yet blind and mute!
Artemis finally understood that she had been mistaking day for night, and night for day. With the hints given by the man, the black and white colors in the eyes of Artemis started to split into gradations, and some shades of grey reappeared. Looking up to the night sky, she could see the changes in the colors of the clouds. Within the outlines, everything were refilled with their original colors. Artemis pulled out the arrow on the man’s leg by force. The man fell into a coma because of the sharp pain, when thunder suddenly resounded through the sky.
Thunderous Supremacy - Zeus: My dear daughter, Artemis.
Thunderous Supremacy - Zeus: I shall bring light and colors back to your world.
Thunderous Supremacy - Zeus: I now assign you to watch over the Gods in the realm of man.
Thunderous Supremacy - Zeus: Journey around the world and report to me about their movements.
The man Artemis had inadvertently shot was called Orion, and he became lame after the injury. Artemis felt very guilty for him. Not having a place to reside, she brought him alongside on the journey, carrying him on his back and travelling around the realm of men as Zeus’ emissary.
Artemis: Greetings. Here is the emissary of Zeus.
Poseidon: The sea is calm and smooth. Please ask the old man not to find me.
Artemis: My father wants to know about the investigation progress.
Hephaestus: We’ve already discovered the origin of the Elder God’s power.
Artemis: Any traces of the Demons?
Athena: Please tell father that we still need some more time.
Artemis and Orion went to find Apollo. Artemis looked forward to seeing him, but Apollo rejected them from entering his Temple of Sun. He roared to Orion.
Apollo: Do you know who is carrying you?
Apollo: How dare you, a mortal, overstep the boundary between Humans and Gods!
Artemis: My brother, please stop. I owe him.
Apollo: Only Humans owe Gods. No Gods will owe a human.
: The priests of Apollo launched an attack on Orion.
Artemis: Orion, you just wait here. I’ll go inside and reason with my brother.
: Artemis repelled the priests and dashed into the temple.
: But from the temple, an arrow flew out and hit Orion right in his heart.
Originally, the common folks lived simple lives, but then they were divided into different camps because of the disputes between the Gods. Being an observer, Artemis seldom intervened. She watched them on the side and stopped visiting the Gods. Artemis would attack from shadows only on Apollo’s followers who were wearing a golden light armor.
Night and her darkness were Artemis’ best companions. She did not have followers to fight for her, let alone soldiers. Artemis was always targeting her arrows at the soldiers with glittering armor.. When she focused her power on the bow and drew it, its limb would glow with dark purple light. Once the arrows were shot, they flew fast to the soldiers of light.
After suffering heavy casualties, Apollo finally walked out of his temple and countered his sister’s attack himself. Facing each other, they drew a bow with exactly the same posture. When the two Gods released the bowstrings, arrows fell down like drops of rain.
: For your own sake, give up.
: The power of Gods cannot illuminate the realm of man.
: Do you still remember our childhood in this realm?
: Of course I remember, and that’s why I want to rectify the mistake.
: To eliminate the differences between Gods and Humans.
: Go back to heaven, my sister.
: There’s nothing left for us to do in the realm of man.
: We can keep fighting against each other. But it’s meaningless.
: I must wait till the end,
: to let our father understand everything happened here.
